We are a law firm, but we're not your average law firm and we have very clear objective of being a go-to trusted advisor to clients for managing cyber risk, from more than just the law.

The team advises small, medium, and large organisations operating across Australia and New Zealand, regionally and globally in response to a range of cyber incidents, as well as assisting clients on matters of privacy compliance, cyber incident readiness and resilience exercises. In recent times, the team has advised on over 1,500 incidents, including several of the highest profile and complex incidents.

The broader Cyber, Data and Digital Law team is led by John Moran, Reece Corbett-Wilkins, Richard Berkahn, Stef Luhrs and Alec Christie, who are all internationally recognised in their fields. The team is known for creating supportive platforms for team members to succeed, with a very strong focus on collaborative culture, personal/professional development, and client facing problem solving.

About the role

Our Sydney office currently has an exciting opportunity available for a Communications Specialist. The Comms Team and this specialist role is a client facing, non-legal role aimed at helping clients develop and implement communications strategies, internally and externally, both before a cyber incident happens and more critically, when a cyber incident happens.

You will work closely with our cyber lawyers and other professionals to provide the absolute best solutions and outcomes to our clients.

We are flexible about location, working hours, and days and can consider arrangements based on your current circumstances and needs.

Key responsibilities

This is a broad ranging role that will see you:

  • Work closely with the wider cyber leadership team to promote and enhance our market leading communications offering
  • Engage on cyber incidents from inception as part of our suite of services to clients under attack - as part of a specialist team within the broader practice area
  • Assist clients formulate crisis communications strategies, and support the client in the roll out of those communications
  • Support clients with PR issues arising from incidents
  • Providing a consultancy service across multiple incidents to multiple clients
  • Provide calm, professional strategic advice to clients in stressful and, often upsetting, situations
  • Utilise your strong media network and other contacts
  • Draft press releases, briefing documents, blog / social media posts and media statements to the market responding to breaches
  • Work to prepare / coach client spokespeople to effectively convey key messages, as required, in live broadcasts.

Essential skills and experience

To be successful in this role you will be an effective relationship builder, and able to manage competing priorities. You must be highly organised, have a great attention to detail, be deadline oriented, a logical and strategic thinker, and thrive in a fast paced and dynamic environment.

  • Degree in public relations, journalism, advertising, commerce or other relevant discipline
  • Interest in cyber and privacy related breaches is beneficial but not essential
  • 2+ years experience gained from a public relations, communications, or media relations role
  • Proven ability to work with key senior stakeholders in a corporate environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills
  • Solid media contacts
  • Ability to work independently and within a team
  • A solid understanding of technology and how it can be developed to create processes and automation in respect of PR.

Provide business development assistance with all other reasonable work-related fee earner requests.
