Ensure fairness for Victorians

  • Uphold excellence in public administration
  • Continuously improve public sector standards and practices
About the organisation

The Victorian Ombudsman (Ombudsman) is a constitutionally entrenched officer of the Victorian Parliament that is responsible for ensuring fairness for Victorians in their dealings with the public sector and improving public administration.

The Ombudsman is independent of Government and answerable to the Victorian Parliament, in part through the Integrity and Oversight Committee of the Parliament.

The Office of the Victorian Ombudsman (OVO) is the administrative body through which the Ombudsman's legislative functions are exercised.

With a culture built around responsiveness, integrity, impartiality, accountability and a commitment to protect human rights, the OVO's focus is to continually improve public sector standards through the delivery of the Ombudsman's program.

About the role

The Ombudsman's key responsibilities include investigating and resolving complaints about administrative actions and decisions taken by government authorities, and reviewing them for lawfulness, reasonableness and fairness.

Leading highly skilled and diverse teams, the Ombudsman provides operational leadership and management of the OVO.

The Ombudsman develops and implements innovative processes and procedures that enable accessible and responsive services, while upholding critical principles of integrity and accountability to drive a fairer public sector.

About you

Known for your commitment to public administration, you are acclaimed for your leadership and systems-level thinking, in highly accountable settings such as regulation, complaints resolution or delivery of services to the public.

Well credentialed and with integrity beyond reproach, your career traverses highly complex environments with a public sector context, featuring exacting requirements, changing circumstances, and a focus on continuous improvement.

You are an adaptable, people focused leader, with deep experience of effectively leading a medium to large cross-functional organisation.

As an influential communicator, you establish and maintain important relationships and collaborate effectively, while exercising balanced, professional judgement to preserve independence and impartiality.

You are strongly committed to ensuring fairness, protecting human rights, enhancing integrity and accountability, and supporting innovation and improvements in the public sector.
