QIMR Berghofer is a world-leading translational medical research institute focused on improving health by developing new diagnostics, better treatments and prevention strategies, specifically in the areas of cancer, infectious diseases, mental health and chronic disorders.

Based in Herston, Brisbane and working in close collaboration with clinicians and other research institutes, QIMR Berghofer is home to more than 600 scientists, students and support staff.

QIMR Berghofer Human Research Ethics Committee (QIMR-Berghofer HREC) reviews research projects carried out by QIMR Berghofer researchers.

The role of the HREC is to protect the welfare of research participants, to foster research that benefits the community and to promote and ensure that research involving humans are carried out in accordance with the National standards as set out by the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council.

Committee meetings are collegial and their function is to bring together various perspectives of members to consider the ethical implications of each research proposal.


Role Purpose / Responsibilities:

Expressions of interest are sought for the position of Chairperson for the QIMR Berghofer's Human Research Ethics Committee.

Through its Human Research Ethics Chair/Committee (HREC), QIMR Berghofer reviews research projects carried out by QIMR Berghofer researchers

The HREC strives to:
- protect the welfare of research participants,
- foster research that benefits the community and
- promote and ensure that research involving humans are carried out in accordance with the National Standards as set out by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) and in accordance with community expectations.


Applicants should have an interest in and commitment to scientific research and be willing to acquire an understanding of the principles underpinning ethical research.


About the role:

The appointment is for an initial period of three years and may be renewed by mutual agreement.

The Chair of the QIMR Berghofer-HREC primary responsibilities are as follows:

  • Attend and Chair HREC meetings scheduled throughout the year
  • Be familiar with and achieve consensus based on the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research, 2007 (updated 2023) and other relevant guidelines and legislations relevant to research proposals
  • Facilitate discussion and consensusbased decisionmaking in relation to the ethical acceptability of research proposals
  • Follow established mechanisms for receiving and handling complaints or concerns about the conduct of an approved research project
  • Observe the QIMR Berghofer HREC Terms of Reference and other relevant QIMR Berghofer policies

Remuneration:

Salary range is $135,000.00 p.a. FTE ($27,000.00 pro-rata) plus super and salary packaging.

This is a part-time (0.2FTE) appointment for 3 years and may be renewed by mutual agreement for a further period.

The Chair will be remunerated for the workload associated with the position, including preparation and follow-up actions for meetings. The Chairperson will be eligible for superannuation entitlements and salary-packaging.
