The Youth Justice Practice Development Team provides internal and external advice and support in relation to:

  • program design and project management implementation support for new initiatives impacting on Youth Justice Services
- practice support for practitioners and services working with young people in the youth justice system, including high level advice relating to court work and legislation,
- practice advice and support relating to interventions with complex statutory clients including those who are in contact with the mental health court, those who have committed violent or sexual offenders and young people with connection to the justice system who are experiencing vulnerabilities such as the impacts of trauma, neglect, poverty, and disability.

The team provides this advice both internally and externally.

The Manager, Youth Justice Practice Development will lead and manage the Development team, ensuring the provision of the effective, high quality services and support for youth justice service centres.

This includes the management of practice enhancement initiatives across the full continuum of Youth Justice including early intervention, community and detention-based practice and transition services, with the aim of reducing reoffending.


The Manager key responsibilities are:

  • Coordinate the provision of authoritative, professional and timely advice to the Director and key stakeholders on issues pertaining to the full continuum of youth justice service delivery of the department and various client groups including community organisations and individuals.
  • Lead effective stakeholder engagement on behalf of the Director with a wide range of organisations, agencies and offices.
  • Coordinate submissions, documentation, proposals and initiatives and contribute a strategic perspective to responses.
  • Manage projects of a complex, sensitive and contentious nature as assigned by the Director including leading the implementation of new youth justice service centre/detention centre initiatives.
  • Coordinate and/or conduct research into youth justice service centre and youth detention centre matters and other practices relating to young people at risk of reoffending within the community affecting the policy and operations of the department, including the analysis of findings and the recommendations of appropriate courses of action.
  • Manage the team including work planning and financial and human resource responsibilities.
  • Active participation in and contribution to the governance and strategic objectives of Youth Justice and the department.
