As a Communications Operator (known as Communication Systems Specialist in the Navy), your responsibilities will revolve around sending, receiving, and analyzing communications and highly classified information across long distances, both at sea and onshore. You will serve as the central communications hub, overseeing a variety of communication systems to facilitate the exchange of information among stakeholders, Command, crew, submarines, and ships.

During your time at sea, your key tasks will include transmitting and receiving classified information using sophisticated military and commercial satellite and radio equipment. You will be crucial in supporting operations like search and rescue missions, disaster relief efforts, diving team activities, boarding parties, and deciphering coded information. Additionally, you will engage in short-range communications with other vessels through visual methods such as Morse code using flashing light and flag signaling.

Your duties may encompass, but are not restricted to:

  • Commercial and military satellite communications
  • Radio communications for the ship (boarding parties and diving team)
  • Handling classified and sensitive information
  • Operating communication networks for disaster relief, distress calls, and search and rescue operations
  • Managing communications among stakeholders, government entities, submarines, and ships
  • Encrypting and decrypting messages, signals, and classified data
  • Utilizing flashing light (Morse code)
  • Flag signaling and ceremonial practices
  • Offering expert communications guidance to Command and crew
  • Strategic use of portable communications devices during operations
  • Basic administration of onboard ICT networks
  • Providing advice for safe ship maneuvers at sea
