Sydney, New South Wales, Australia Microsoft Full time
Overview

Microsoft Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO&I) is responsible for managing the core datacenter infrastructure for Microsoft's cloud business. The Datacenter Engineering (DCE) team handles the delivery of this infrastructure, involving intricate and large-scale construction projects. We are seeking a dedicated individual to contribute to the creation of the cloud datacenters powering some of the world's largest online services. Emphasizing our commitment to inclusivity and positive workplace culture, we strive to provide an environment where every employee can thrive.

Job Description

This role as a Senior Mechanical Engineer will involve being on-site at a Microsoft datacenter campus, overseeing ongoing construction activities. The responsibilities include daily on-site presence to ensure quality design and progress tracking for multiple datacenter builds simultaneously. You will be accountable for monitoring construction compliance from the initial stages to commissioning, collaborating closely with engineering, procurement, controls, and construction teams. Additionally, this position will offer project management, technical guidance, decision-making, and leadership in engineering throughout the construction process, leading up to the turnover to Microsoft Datacenter Operations. The role entails supporting coordination across multiple disciplines, addressing issues, driving continuous improvement initiatives, and documenting project insights for future design implementations.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities:

  • Oversee mechanical engineering aspects on-site throughout the construction of a long-term datacenter campus development.
  • Conduct regular site inspections to monitor progress, review construction against design specifications, and identify any potential issues for engineering evaluation.
  • Establish and maintain a close collaboration with all Microsoft site personnel - participating in quality and assurance meetings, milestone reviews, risk management related to Electrical and Electrical Power Monitoring Systems (EPMS) with Architectural Engineering (AE) experts.
  • Examine construction documents, specifications, design standards, operational sequences, and commissioning materials for technical accuracy.
  • Assist in reviewing submittals, responding to RFIs, and conducting commissioning tasks. Ensure prompt responses to facilitate smooth project progress.
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills for interaction at various business levels, including executives.
  • Collaborate effectively with technical and non-technical teams in a dynamic environment, maintaining composure and integrity. Display meticulous attention to detail and a strong work ethic.
