Sitting within CBA's Institutional Banking and Markets (IB&M), Global Commodities, Trade & Carbon (CTC) supports domestic and international commodity markets and trade and supply chain finance for CBA's domestic and international corporate and institutional clients.


Our Commodities team works closely with the Bank's key industry coverage teams in Natural Resources & Energy as well as the Industrial, Transport & Consumer sectors to provide commodity risk management and financing solutions.

These clients include producers, processors, traders or consumers of commodities, across metals, energy & agricultural products but also Central Banks, Financial Institutions & hedge funds.


The team employs 30+ people located in Sydney, London, Amsterdam, Singapore & New York as key hubs for the commodities business, including a team of 10 traders located in London & Sydney.

We are now seeking an experienced and talented individual to join our Commodities Trading team as an Associate Director. As part of our Sydney-based team, you will play a crucial role in driving our commodities trading business forward.

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to our strategic growth plans and work with a global team of professionals in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.


Key Responsibilities:

Pricing and Risk Management: effective pricing and risk management across various commodities products, with a primary focus on Crude Oil and associated products. _You will also have exposure to markets such as carbon, agriculture, bulks, base metals, and precious metals. _

Trading Execution and Revenue Generation: Utilize your expertise to identify key trends and themes in the commodities markets. Take ownership of specific trading books, execute trading strategies, and manage P&L

Strategic Business Planning: actively contribute to identifying growth opportunities. Your insights and ideas will play a vital role in shaping our longer-term strategy.

  • Engage with our global commodity trading team to foster an exchange of information, ideas, and best practices that will contribute to the success of our trading strategies.

Process Enhancement: Collaborate with the commodity quant team to continuously improve pricing and risk management capabilities.

Cross-Functional Collaboration: Engage with the commodities sales and structuring teams as needed to assist in the execution of the commodities strategy.

Stakeholder Management: Develop strong relationships with key stakeholders within Institutional Banking and Markets to contribute to the overall success of our trading activities.

We're interested in hearing from people who have:

  • Proven experience in commodities trading, with a focus on Crude Oil and associated products. _Familiarity with carbon, agriculture, bulks, base metals, and precious metals markets is advantageous. _
  • Strong pricing and risk management capabilities within commodities trading.
  • Demonstrated track record in generating trading revenues and managing P&L.
  • Excellent analytical and problemsolving skills.
  • Strong understanding of financial markets and trading strategies.
  • Ability to thrive in a fastpaced and dynamic environment.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., Finance, Economics, Business) is preferred.


You will demonstrate the ability to think independently to provide innovative solutions to our clients, drawing on your experience or keen interest in global energy, metals and agricultural markets.

A further key to the role will be an understanding of Australia's transition to a lower carbon economy and the implications and opportunities arising from this transition.
