Animators at Framestore are responsible for creating the movements and behaviors of 3D computer-generated characters, creatures, objects, and crowds for top-notch VFX films.


Responsibilities of Lead Animators:

  • Lead a team of animators on a show
  • Act as the primary point of contact for production and supervisors, ensuring clear communication, addressing creative challenges, offering solutions, and adapting to production changes
  • Assign and oversee tasks for the team in collaboration with the animation supervisor
  • Demonstrate a deep understanding of the animation tasks, anticipating technical and creative hurdles
  • Be ready to step in for the animation supervisor if required
  • Familiarize with workflow templates, methodology, and documentation, and share with the team as needed
  • Collaborate with technology teams to configure department tools for the team and the show
  • Keep supervisors and the Head of Department (HOD) informed of project advancements for potential integration into other projects
  • Assist HOD and supervisors with bids when needed
  • Effectively manage the team to prevent conflicts and disputes
  • Cultivate positive relationships with other departments and address issues promptly
  • Participate in daily meetings, present team's work, and guide artists on presentation techniques
  • Mentor, share knowledge, and contribute to the development of junior team members
  • Provide consistent feedback to ensure timely delivery of high-quality work
  • Collaborate with technical animators to maintain updated show wikis

Essential Skills:

  • Experience in mentoring or leading a team
  • Proficiency in Maya
  • Understanding of physical motion, weight, balance, texture, and form
  • Knowledge of rigs, animation pipelines, data transfer between tools, and ability to handle pressure
  • Openness to guidance, adaptability to change, and attention to detail
  • Reliable with strong time management skills to meet deadlines
  • Excellent organization, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Commitment to creative teamwork and collaboration
  • Adaptability and eagerness to acquire new processes and skills
  • Working knowledge of modeling, rigging, and Mel/Python scripting
  • Understanding of human and animal anatomy and life drawing skills
  • Experience with motion capture data

Desirable Skills:

  • Background in traditional animation and/or art
