About Sacred Heart Mission

Sacred Heart Mission (SHM) is a Victorian not-for-profit organisation established in 1982 by the local parish priest and community. Founded on the Catholic Social Teaching, SHM addresses homelessness, deep disadvantage and social exclusion by building people's capacity and promoting fairer and more inclusive communities and service systems. Its wide-ranging services include housing, health, aged care and social and economic inclusion. In 2023, SHM successfully completed a 10-year strategic plan that evolved the organisation into an innovative and well-recognised not-for-profit assisting hundreds of people to live a fulfilling life and achieve their personal goals.

Over the last 12 months, under the joint leadership of the board and new CEO Hang Vo, SHM initiated a consultative process with staff, consumers, supporters and stakeholders to develop Strategy 2030. Building on considerable past achievements and existing capabilities, the six-year strategy aims to serve more people and communities by expanding into additional service areas and geographies and enhancing SHM's advocacy. Success hinges on an engaged, high-performing culture where staff understand their roles in executing the strategy. A culture where cohesion and alignment of people, roles, process, and operations enables and encourages everyone to do their very best. The priority across the first two years of Strategy 2030 is to evolve the organisation and strengthen its foundations. To support the ambitious strategic plan, SHM are looking to appoint three key executive roles and additional functional roles to join the organisation at this exciting time as we deliver against an expansive growth agenda.

The role of the Director People and Culture

The Director, People and Culture, in close collaboration with the CEO, assumes a central role in shaping and executing the strategic and operational imperatives of the P&C function. This entails not only leading initiatives to foster a vibrant organisational culture, but also championing learning and leadership initiatives. With a keen eye on the evolving landscape, the Director ensures the workforce is supported and poised to meet emerging trends and demands, thereby bolstering SHM's impact and growth trajectory. Leading a team of four direct reports across People Services, Learning and Development, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, as well as Payroll, this role will bring cohesion, and build capability within the function. Moreover, there's a firm expectation for the Director to forge meaningful connections with individuals availing themselves of SHM's services, underscoring the centrality of human engagement in driving organisational success.

The preferred candidate for this role should hold tertiary qualifications in areas such as HR, Business, or a related field. They must demonstrate significant senior leadership experience within organisations focused on growth. This includes a track record of successfully leading strategic P&C initiatives to cultivate an engaged, adaptable, and high-performing workforce, with a focus on sustainability and resilience. Proficiency in driving transformations in employee engagement, leadership, L&D, and DEI initiative, and deep expertise in HR industrial and employee relations are essential. Collaborative engagement with CEOs, Boards, and committees is imperative. Strong interpersonal skills, outstanding communication abilities, and adeptness in strategic planning and execution, complemented by effective decision-making and problem-solving skills, are fundamental attributes for excelling in this role.
