Role:

The Business Manager will:

- plan for and work alongside staff in relation to extra-curricular programs including the Aerobics program, Outdoor Education and camps and activities
- provide advice to staff on spending against budget in respect to faculties, programs and other school projects

  • Manage fund raising activities
- be a key member of the Executive Administration Team along with the three Assistant Principals and the Principal
- be a member of the Strategic Implementation Team(SIT)
- be a member of College Consultative Team


The Business Manager reports to the Finance Committee and the MGSC School Council throughout the year and is responsible for ensuring that the finances of the college are managed in line with the DET processes.

To this end the Business Manager is expected to have a deep knowledge and understanding of:

- the VGSA in relation to staffing requirements
- the SRP Budgeting each year
- the role of each of the Education Support (ES) Staff within the college
- financial systems used in schools (CASES 21)
- workforce planning in relation to the financial viability of the college
- software packages such as Google Workspace & Microsoft Office

The Business Manager is expected to:

  • work independently to direct the work of all Education Support Staff (ES)
  • Promote a friendly, respectful and supportive work culture where teaching and nonteaching staff genuinely work in tandem in a mutually respectful environment and where their contribution will be appreciated and acknowledged by colleagues
  • Develop and implement systems and processes that embed best practice in the management of college finances and ensure compliance with audit requirements; DET policy and other relevant authorities such as the ATO
  • Optimise resourcing including the development, implementation and monitoring of the college budget. Manage the Administration and other subprogram budgets as required and support program leaders in managing their budgets
  • Have oversight of the hiring of buses and the compliance, OH&S and procurement policies and procedures associated with this
  • Act as the Return to Work Coordinator for the College
  • Lead the ES workforce, including provision of support and training to foster professional growth
  • Research, plan and prepare PDP programs for support staff
  • Manage recruitment procedures
  • Assist in the development of work practices that ensure appropriate occupational health and safety standards are maintained
  • Manage procedures relating to employee relations issues
  • Assist in the development of human resource planning
  • Be a key member of the Marketing and Communications Team in order to raise the awareness of the importance of being a girls' school
  • Perform other duties appropriate to the classification as requested to assist in the effective delivery of services

Location Profile:

Mentone Girls Secondary College (MGSC) is the only government girls' school in the South-Eastern suburbs. Students attending the college travel from over 42 different suburbs. The enrolment numbers are around 1000 students each year. The school has high expectations of its staff and students. The College offers specialist programs such as instrumental music and band forms. The College has an established Enhancement Program available from Year 7. The college also has an International Student Program comprising students from several different countries.
