The Opportunity


An exciting opportunity exists within our Human Resource Business Unit for an experienced
Work Health and Safety (WHS) Business Partner, with a positive attitude and a great work ethic, to join the WHS team on a maximum term (2 year) full-time basis (38 hours per week).


Reporting to the Service Lead Work Health and Safety (WHS), the WHS Business Partner will be responsible for supporting the Service Lead in the implementation of a comprehensive work health and safety framework and to partner with the business leadership team to facilitate coordination of planning, performance and improvement initiatives within the health and safety function of the City.

This includes identifying business needs from a workplace health, safety and risk management perspective and review of existing workplace health and safety programs and tools.

This will include work health and safety systems; policies and procedures; and encompasses safety, workers compensation, injury management and health and wellbeing.

The key role responsibilities include, but is not limited to:

  • Lead the implementation of practicable outcome focused solutions and influence Directorates to implement, monitor and review those solutions.
  • Embed a consistent understanding within Directorates and other stakeholders of the extent of their duty of care to ensure that they fulfil their WHS legal obligations.
  • Influence the Directorates to include Health and Safety implications in the procurement and design process.
  • Obtain and share WHS knowledge and learning, such as Safety Alerts, articles, research and newsletters, to influence proactive WHS risk management.
  • Oversee the management of WHS training, workers' compensation claims and injury management processes.
  • Work with the Directorates to gain an understanding of business strategy as it relates to WHS needs and delivery of adhoc WHS requirements.
  • Be a point of contact on WHS matters and provide relevant operational and strategic advice.
  • Provision of support to the WHS Service Lead across WHS team deliverables.
  • Advise on the conduct of workplace safety investigations, meetings, evacuation drills and other WHS related matters.
  • Provide WHS input into organisation wide HR programs and assisting with organisation wide HR initiatives including collaborating with the HR Business Partners from common directorates.
  • Coaching and mentoring people leaders and managers on WHS matters to achieve positive change in workplace health and safety.
  • Building strong stakeholder relationships to assist in achieving organisational objectives.

About You
To be considered for this opportunity, you'll possess the following skills and/or qualifications:

  • Relevant WHS qualification (Certificate IV) or significant experience in a similar WHS role in a large and complex organisation.
  • Knowledge of the management of workers' compensation claims process and experience in the development of suitable return to work plans.
  • Selfmotivated with strong organisational skills and able to work independently on multiple activities, prioritise and adapt to changing conditions
  • Competency in workplace investigations, problem solving and decision making with ICAM lead investigator or incident investigation training and experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to coach and mentor managers on people matters and provoke positive change in people development.
  • Certificate IV in Workplace Training and Assessment or capacity to obtain.
