About the Role The State Director is the most senior staff member of the Greens (WA).

The role provides support and advice for the party's decision making bodies, and will ensure the implementation of party decisions and strategic goals.

Collaboration with volunteers, staff, MPs, candidates and the local community is key to this role.

The State Director must work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds — this includes in the management of staff and volunteers, and in the promotion of a positive and welcoming party culture.

This role manages the day-to-day operations of the party and its resources in accordance with legal obligations, agreed strategies and policies, with some support from other staff and volunteers.

To succeed in this role, you'll need to be a skilled communicator and campaign strategist, with the ability to problem solve, lead a team, and work effectively within the party's structures.

The party's primary decision making process is consensus-based, so you must be skilled at working consultatively, and facilitating effective, collaborative work at many levels.

This role will involve some evening and weekend work — so effective time-management, delegation and feedback skills are essential.
This job is best suited to someone passionate about people power, and building successful grassroots campaignsClassification and salary: Manager 1.1 to Manager 1.3, depending on experience ($103,733.97 to $113,032.93pa + super)

Agreement:
Greens (WA) Inc Staff Agreement 2020 or as replaced (Industrial Agreement).
Remuneration will be in accordance with the Industrial Agreement.
This role is eligible to be covered by the Australian Services Union

Work type:
Permanent-Full Time (1.0 FTE)

Start Date:
By negotiation, with possibility of immediate start.

Probation Period:

Six months Reporting Relationships This position reports to The Greens (WA) Representative Council, and is managed by the appointed Line Manager of the Council's Administration Working Group.


Positions Under Direct Supervision:

The role involves supervision of a team of staff (currently four people) with up to three additional staff members joining by July/ August 2024.

There will be some short-term staff engaged in the weeks leading up to the State and Federal elections.
The role also involves direct supervision of volunteers at various times. Staff employed are a mixture of full time and part time employees.

Key Responsibilities:

Collaborate with Representatives' Council and other party committees to set and implement campaign and organisational goals, and report on agreed outcomes.

Other key committees include the Administration Working Group, Election Campaign Committee, National Working Group and campaign issue groups.

Advise, manage and lead as required on election campaign strategy, working alongside staff and volunteer teams to achieve our election goals.

Oversee the appointment and management of office staff and volunteers, and ensure a safe workplace for staff and volunteers. Oversee engagement with the broader community through traditional media, social media and community campaign tactics.

Encourage communication and collaboration between the The Greens (WA), Parliamentary Greens Offices and other member bodies of the Australian Greens nationally.

Provide oversight of the operations and election budgets, including by developing budgets and fundraising initiatives in consultation with the party.

Promote the recruitment and retention of volunteers, and encourage a welcoming party culture. Perform risk assessment and crisis management, and ensure that the party complies with all relevant legislative and regulatory obligations. Work effectively with diverse staff and volunteers.

Understanding of and commitment to The Greens (WA) principles, policies and an understanding of the Western Australian political landscape.


  • Demonstrated experience working with First Nations people, people of colour and other diverse groups. 3.
Demonstrated experience in designing and implementing campaigns within a political party, advocacy organisation, or similar. 4.
Well developed interpersonal and relational skills, including trust building, consultation, advocacy and negotiation.
Demonstrated in internal and external stakeholder management and engagement.

  • Demonstrate a commitment to people-powered change, consensus decision making, and openness to feedback 6.
Experience in managing and working with a diverse and engaged community, to achieve results or strategic outcomes.

  • Demonstrated management and administrative capacity, preferably in a not for profit or similar member led organisation, including the personnel and budgetary functions of the organisation.
  • Experience in developing, managing and evaluating communications for an internal and external audience; this may include media, copywriting, social media and emails.
  • Well-developed organisational and analytical skills.

This includes the capacity to prioritise competing demands in a fast-paced environment, work cooperatively, and use initiative and sound judgement to achieve outcomes.


  • Knowledge and experience of The Greens (WA) purpose, governance, and activities, including the consensus-based decision making on which the Greens movement is based.
  • Experience using Greens systems like Civi, Rocket, or experience with a similar CRM, or the ability and willingness to quickly acquire these skills.
  • Experience volunteering or working with volunteers.
Essential Eligibility Requirements Appointment is subject to a 6 month probationary period.

Appointment is subject to a referee check, national police check, working with children check, and a media check (including social media).

Available to attend meetings (offsite and onsite) outside of normal working hours, including weekends. Able to travel intrastate and interstate occasionally, and to stay overnight or for short periods.
