Who we're looking for

We are seeking Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with cultural knowledge and life skills who can communicate well, remain calm under pressure and want to help young offenders make better choices.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Youth Officers provide cultural advice and support to young people, their families, colleagues and the community.

The roles include positive leadership and supervision while assisting in the care, development and security of young people in custody in NSW.

About Youth Justice NSW
Youth Justice NSW is a division of the Department of Communities and Justice within the Stronger Communities NSW cluster.

Formerly known as Juvenile Justice, Youth Justice NSW supervises and provides custodial and community-based services for young offenders under the _Children (Detention Centres) Act, 1987_.

There are six Youth Justice centres across NSW which accommodate young offenders and offer health, educational and spiritual services - including individual case management, specialised counselling, and training in job and living skills.

There are 34 Youth Justice community offices that provide community-based intervention for young people who are at risk of reoffending.

Youth Justice NSW aims to work with young people to reduce their reoffending, rehabilitate and return them to society.

About the Court Logistics Unit

The Court Logistics Unit comprises multidisciplinary staff and teams of Youth Officers who supervise and provide direct appropriate care and custody of young people appearing at various courts, and the safe and secure transportation of young people between courts and Youth Justice Centres.

The Court Logistics Unit is based across three Sydney metropolitan Youth Justice Centres and five Children's Courts Holding Facilities managed by Youth Justice.

About the role

Court Logistics Youth Officers are responsible for the transportation of young offenders in secure transport vehicles between centres and to courts across NSW.

Youth Officers are accountable for supervision of young people in custody at the five metropolitan Children's Courts and other regional Courts.

Youth Officers provide support and guidance to young people during their court appearances, some of whom exhibit challenging behaviour.

Court Logistics Youth Officers ensure young people's needs are met by practicing pro-social modelling and encouraging pro-social values and behaviours in their interactions, while maintaining the safety and security of the unit.

Court Logistics Youth Officers are rostered according to operational needs within the Sydney metropolitan area. It is primarily a Monday to Friday role but may include some weekend work. Allocated shifts are Monday to Friday (8.5 hr shifts, includes 1⁄2 hr lunch). Usual shifts are 8am pm, though some shifts can start earlier or later. There are some opportunities for overtime after allocated shifts or on weekends.

The positions are based at various Sydney Metropolitan locations as follows:

  • Youth Justice Centres: Cobham (St Marys), Reiby (Campbelltown) and Frank Baxter (Kariong)
  • Children's Courts: Surry Hills, Parramatta, Campbelltown, Broadmeadow, Woy Woy and Cobham AVL (Cobham Youth Justice Centre)

Court Logistics Youth Officers are frontline staff who predominantly work outside the secure residential units of a Youth Justice Centre.

For this reason, Court Logistics is a specialised unit that focuses on the secure supervision and transportation of young people, through use of secure vehicles, advanced security technology and Youth Officers who undertake specialised training in secure movements of young people in custody.
