The OPP has an exciting opportunity for solicitors who have a strong interest in the criminal jurisdictions of the County and Supreme Courts.

It offers the opportunity to exercise previously acquired legal practice skills in the preparation and conduct of criminal litigation.

The successful applicant will be responsible for the preparation of moderately complex matters for early resolution or trial in the County and Supreme Courts of Victoria and instructing Counsel appearing for the Crown in those cases.

They will also prepare matters for prosecution at committal stage. There may also be an opportunity to work on highly complex matters under the guidance of more senior Solicitors.

The incumbent will work in a dynamic environment, with changing priorities and should possess the ability to work in an agile manner, contributing to and embracing innovative solutions and ways of working.

Flexible working arrangements, including hybrid working options are available.

About the Role:

  • Prepare and instruct in large and complex matters, including major trials and taskforce investigations, and appear when required as outlined in the OPP Advocacy Competency Framework.
  • Undertake high level research, investigation and analysis of moderately complex issues and provide written and verbal advice and recommendations as required to external agencies, Counsel, OPP Staff, Crown Prosecutors the Executive and the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to ensure the effective prosecution of cases.
  • Ensure that cases are competently, efficiently and expeditiously prepared, that suitable Counsel is briefed and that cases are properly presented before the Court to ensure the provision of an effective legal service
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare litigation of moderate complexity at an advanced level, including the preparation and conduct of committals, plea hearings and trials, and appear where required.
  • High level interpersonal skills with the ability to liaise effectively with relevant stakeholders such as OPP staff, Crown Prosecutors, complainants, witnesses, police, counsel and members of the public.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as an effective team member and contribute to innovative ways of working.
