South Wharf, Victoria, Australia Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre Full time
12-month full-time contract role

  • Lead the communications team
  • Trusted 2IC role to Head of department, overseeing corporate affairs, engagement, and CSR
  • Base salary + car parking + benefits at a great location (South Wharf/CBD)
Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) is the home of unconventional. At MCEC we do things a little differently. We bring fresh ideas and imagination to every event. We happily turn concepts on their head to make each experience momentous.

We welcome events of all shapes and sizes, from board meetings and small celebrations through to conventions, gala dinners, exhibitions, and concerts.

Our doors are open for events and moments that connect us - in person, virtual or hybrid, and everything in between.

Our city is our inspiration, located in the vibrant South Wharf precinct, just a stroll along the Yarra River.

Melbourne is on show at MCEC - in the architecture and design, food and hospitality, AV technology, Customer Service, location, and views.

About the role

Are you an established communications leader that enjoys thinking about the big picture, while delivering value in the communications you produce? Do you want to play a lead role in developing external and internal corporate communications strategies? Are you interested in working in a broader corporate affairs department as 2IC? If this sounds like you, then our Corporate Communications Manager role could be the opportunity you've been looking for.

As our Corporate Communications Manager you'll lead a small team responsible for enhancing and maintaining MCEC's reputation and relationships with key stakeholders.

You and your team will work across internal and external communications, issues management, and media relations.

You'll own the corporate communications for MCEC whilst helping to create the voice of our new CEO and articulate their vision.

This team leadership role is 2IC to the Head of Advocacy, Impact & Reputation, acting in this role as required.

You'll play a key role as part of the wider department, working to amplify MCEC's impact and create advocates for the business through communications.

You'll also have the opportunity to grow your experience across the corporate affairs suite, including stakeholder engagement, government relations, corporate social responsibility, and industry and ambassador partnerships.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Coaching and supporting a team of communications specialists
  • Developing and implementing corporate communications plans that build MCEC's profile
  • Proactively identifying and advising on media opportunities, key forums, awards and public speaking engagements for MCEC to build its corporate profile
  • Managing the production of key corporate collateral, including the Annual Report and award submissions, and prepare speech notes for Executives and Trust Members
  • Crafting internal messages for the Chief Executive relating to key business updates
  • Taking the lead on responses to incoming media enquiries relating to reputational issues

About You

You'll have a proven background in both external and internal corporate communications with experience leading a team in a fast-paced environment.

You'll be comfortable working with ambiguity at times and will also be able to embrace our agile ways of working.

Just as important will be your attitude towards continuous improvement and willingness to be both hands-on and strategic in your work.

You will partner with all departments to plan and deliver corporate communication outcomes and can build strong relationships with Boards, Executives and Senior Leaders to provide service and advice for visibility of leaders and experts with key stakeholder audiences.

You will act as the 2IC to the Head of Advocacy, Impact & Reputation with deliverables relating to issues, crisis management and stakeholder communications.

You will support and mentor the Corporate Communications Specialist (Strategy), Corporate Communications Specialist (Media) and Employee Communications Coordinator, ensuring the timely and effective delivery of communications.

We're also looking for:

  • Demonstrated ability in managing complex issues and critical incident communication response
  • Excellent communication skills including exceptional writing ability across a range of channels and mediums, including speech writing
  • Proven experience in building meaningful and beneficial relationships with internal and external stakeholders
Experience writing for government audiences would be highly regarded.

Interview process:

The start date will depend on availability but ideally, we are looking for the role to commence in February 2023
