About the Business Unit

The Koori Justice Unit (KJU) operates within the Aboriginal Justice Group of the Department of Justice and Community Safety (DJCS) with the main objective of establishing a fair and easily accessible justice system for Aboriginal individuals.

The KJU oversees the execution of the Victorian Aboriginal Justice Agreement - Burra Lotjpa Dunguludja - currently in its AJA4 phase, in partnership with the Aboriginal community and the Victorian government. Through established networks like the Aboriginal Justice Forum (AJF) and others, the unit successfully implements initiatives including early intervention programs, diversion strategies, and support for rehabilitation and reintegration.

About the Role

As the Senior Policy Officer, you will lead the development and coordination of Aboriginal Justice policy advice to facilitate the implementation of the Aboriginal Justice Agreement. Working closely with various business units, you will offer strategic insights on the monitoring and implementation of the AJA and other Aboriginal Affairs frameworks at both state and federal levels.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing strategic and operational policy advice on Aboriginal justice matters in collaboration with Aboriginal Communities.
  • Developing detailed reports on significant issues, delivering analysis and advice on key emerging matters in the Victorian justice system for Aboriginal individuals.
  • Leading and organizing Aboriginal justice policy advice to support various groups and initiatives, contributing to the driving force behind the AJA and self-determined solutions.

About you

To excel in this role, you should demonstrate:

In-depth knowledge and comprehension of the Aboriginal community, encompassing society, culture, and related challenges.

The ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with the Victorian Aboriginal community.

Proficiency in policy development and execution, along with experience in advocacy and implementing policy reforms through community consultations.

Qualifications

A relevant tertiary qualification in law, public policy, Aboriginal affairs, or a related field is preferred.
