As Executive Director of one of Arizona's premier historical museum societies, the incumbent will lead an experienced staff of museum professionals and volunteers while also working closely with a community Board of Trustees, community leaders, and legislators to ensure that this important treasure, founded in 1928 by Arizona's own Sharlot Hall, is historically authentic, financially strong and treasured within the Prescott community and throughout Yavapai County and beyond.
The incumbent also leads the Sharlot Hall Historical Society, a linked partner non-profit organization with the same governance structure in fulfilling the Prescott Historical Society mission.
Job Duties:
• Leads, directs, and has authority over all phases of museum programming, collections, archives, educational programming, fundraising, marketing, special events, and facility management to ensure both the Prescott Historical Society (PHS) and the Sharlot Hall Historical Society (SHHS) thrive in their mission and values while providing for sustainable annual fiscal responsibility
• Provides leadership, mentorship, and support to all staff members and volunteers of both PHS and SHHS operations to ensure excellent outcomes through staff and volunteer collaboration and coordinated implementation
• By working closely with the Board of Trustees leads a comprehensive philanthropy and development office by supervising staff and outside providers to create thorough and sustainable fundraising campaigns targeted to government agencies, charitable foundations, and individuals using best practices and creative programming, resulting in support for museum operations, programming and growth
• Working closely with the Board of Trustees, staff, and outside consultants if needed, leads a periodic long-term strategic planning process consistent with the mission and values of both PHS and SHHS
• Serves as the primary liaison for PHS and SHHS with appropriate officials at the state, county, and local levels to ensure achievement of the mission and values, needed financial resources, and maintenance of the historic campus and its collections
• Serves as the primary ambassador for the museum by developing and maintaining positive relationships with museum members, community and corporate supporters, and other important stakeholders
• Ensures continuous learning for self and staff through professional conferences and meetings, best practices in the museum field designed to lift PHS and SHHS reputation, and mission delivery throughout its regional area of influence
• Other duties as assigned consistent with the role and responsibilities of an Executive Director
Knowledge:
• Possesses or will gain a high level of knowledge of Arizona history with an emphasis on the Central Highlands to ensure that the museum conforms to its mission and values
• Experienced in museum leadership and/or related fields such as history, archeology, non-profit management, or business
• Possesses knowledge of the importance of fundraising, marketing and community/legislative relationships and other important constituencies
Skills:
• Experience as a leader for a professional, multi-layered organization demonstrating organizational skills in organizational management, staffing, planning, development, and related best practices
• Excellent communication, written, and public speaking skills
• Strong business leadership and skills related to sustainable operating and financial performance
Abilities:
• Ability to lead all members of the organization with fairness, openness, humility, and empathy
• Personal and professional drive, persistence, resilience, and optimism
• To engage individuals and groups both within and outside the museum through personal style, humor, and warmth
• Demonstrated qualities of integrity, dependability, collegiality, creativity and superb interpersonal relationships
• High emotional intelligence
Selective Preference(s):
• An advanced degree in the museum, history, archeology, or non-profit management fields is preferred with a minimum of 10 years of experience in leadership positions
• Business administration skills are preferred
