Our role
This is an opportunity to join one of Queensland's most reputable and fastest growing Intellectual Property and Technology teams. This is an energetic and driven team that lives and breathes technology, IP and innovation. We are seeking an experienced patent associate to join our Intellectual Property, Technology & Cyber Security team.


The role will require someone who has proven experience in building a patent practice incorporating patent drafting, prosecution and strategy.

Experience and contacts within the USA market will be looked upon favourably, as will be in keeping with our strategic focus on USA / Australia cross border trade and commerce.


Duties:

  • Advising clients in relation to patent portfolio management, infringement and patentability issues as well as assisting in patent oppositions and/or patent litigation.
  • Building and managing a channel of inbound IP work particularly for IP filings originating from the USA and China.
  • Advising on Australia, USA and China crossborder IP issues and transactions.
  • Brief and provide inputs to Solicitors and Barristers involved in litigious patent claims.
  • Activities related to receiving, reviewing, forwarding, and responding to Patent Officer Examiner's Reports, researching, and preparing replies to client queries, interaction with clients and inventors for preparation of patent specifications, the provision of advice on the infringement and/or validity of patents, preparation of articles for publication.
  • Management of administrative functions, including recording of workinprogress (WIP), management of potential and actual conflicts of interests, management of professional standard obligations.
  • Opportunities for development and retention of overseas client and associate relationships, including potential overseas travel.
  • Engaging and being proactive in business development and marketing activities including local and cross border client development retention
  • Assisting in securing and maintain client portfolios.

Skills and Experience:

  • At least 10 years of experience in a patents focussed practice
  • A proven track record of building a patent practice and developing and managing a team
  • Experience in board range of attorney work
  • Experience and contacts within the USA market will be looked upon favourably
  • Strong analytical ability
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Drive and enthusiasm
  • Excellent interpersonal and time management skills
  • Qualification in relevant field
