About the Organisation

The City of Port Phillip is an inner-city council with around 1000 employees who deliver more than 100 programs and services to our residents, businesses, and visitors. These range from childcare and immunizations, to libraries, management of parks and open space, rubbish collection, road maintenance, and more. City of Port Phillip has zero tolerance for child abuse and is a committed Child Safe organization.

About the Role

This exciting and challenging role leads the program of waste transformation across the City. The role is responsible for coordinating efforts across the organization to transform the way that waste services are provided for the residents, traders, and visitors to the City. The Program Director – Waste Futures leads a small team of specialist strategy staff and coordinates a larger ad hoc team across the organization to deliver outcomes for the community. By applying best practice project and program management, the role coordinates a complex services transformation. This includes working closely with Council's operational areas, finance, sustainability, communications & engagement, and technology teams to achieve the outcomes espoused in Council's integrated waste management strategy, Don't Waste It. The Program Director – Waste Futures is also responsible for overseeing Council's contaminated land management program. Reporting to the Executive Manager – Construction, Contracts & Operations, the role is responsible for providing high-quality, evidence-based advice to Councillors and the Executive Leadership Team.

Duties:

  • Lead the development and delivery of Council's waste transformation through the application of best practice program and project management.
  • Provide outstanding strategic guidance to help Council fulfill the commitments in the Don't Waste It Waste Management Strategy and deliver on Recycling Victoria.
  • Effectively manage annual budgets and service plans.

Skills and Experience

  • Experience in the waste and resource recovery sector is vital to be successful in this role.
  • A proven ability to develop and deliver complex strategies of service transformation.
  • A tertiary qualification in environmental science or related discipline is highly desirable but not mandatory.
  • Postgraduate qualifications in project management would be an advantage.
