Assistant Project Officer, Clerk Grade 5/6, Wollongong


An exciting opportunity to join a high performing team responsible for the development of new fleet vehicles, vessels and trailers for the NSW State Emergency Service (SES) under the Fleet Replacement Program (FRP).


  • Contribute to the development of nextgeneration fleet assets

  • Full time temporary role until 30 June 2024 with the possibility of extension or ongoing.

About the opportunity


NSW SES is undertaking a major program of fleet asset replacement, including vehicles, vessels and trailers, over the next six years and beyond.

The Assistant Project Officer works closely with the Capability team and Fleet Services team and is responsible for contributing to the initiation and design component of next-generation fleet assets by:

  • Development of Functional Specification documentation for new assets;
  • Undertaking research in emerging vehicle/vessel technologies and bestpractice;
  • Working closely with manufacturers for the safe design, build and development of new fleet assets;
  • Development and review of support documentation; and
  • Contributing to continuous improvement through safety and capability enhancements.
The Assistant Project Officer reports directly to the Fleet Capability Advisor

The NSW State Emergency Service (NSW SES) is an emergency and rescue service made up almost entirely of volunteers and supported by a small staff contingent.

NSW SES is a key influencer of other emergency service agencies and works closely with these partners to modernise and grow volunteering to save lives and protect communities


While major responsibilities are for flood, storm operations and tsunamis, the NSW SES also provides the majority of general rescue effort in the rural parts of the state.

This includes road accident rescue, vertical rescue, bush search and rescue, evidence searches (both metropolitan and rural), other forms of specialist rescue that may be required due to local threats, Urban Search and Rescue and Community First Response.


About you

To be successful in this role you will:

  • be a self-starter with good time management skills;
- have the ability to problem solve and think analytically;
- have experience in undertaking research and development;
- have excellent technical writing skills; and
- be proficient in building and maintaining relationships with internal and external stakeholders
