About the team:

The Departments Shared Services Hub provides payroll services under the Whole-of-Government Shared Services Programme.

The Shared Services Hub is committed to delivering effective and efficient payroll services in line with Service Level Agreements negotiated with each client agency.


Working in the Hub presents a unique opportunity to be involved in developing innovative service delivery arrangements relating to both systems and processes - and to collaborate across the Public Sector.

In the delivery of payroll services the Hub utilises the Aurion HRMS.


Effective client engagement is an essential component of our service delivery, including, on occasion, in respect to the onboarding of new clients.

As an Assistant Manager, Payroll, you will be required to undertake work that is complex in nature. You will routinely work under limited direction with the opportunity to demonstrate initiative, teamwork and leadership.

  • Experience in managing payroll teams to deliver payroll services with strong skills in payroll systems, helpdesk systems and Microsoft office products
  • Experience in undertaking pay transactions on an automated pay management system
  • Experience with Aurion and ServiceNow (both preferred but not essential)
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge in complex Payroll administration in a government environment (preferred), or equivalent private sector roles.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and leading high performing teams, including building a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills to engage effectively with all stakeholders.
  • Ability to identify and deliver shortterm tasking and to contribute to strategic planning for longerterm initiatives with strong problemsolving skills, judgement and analytical skills
  • Excellent organisational skills, including energy and drive, and the ability to manage priorities to achieve results
  • Resilient with a positive attitude and responsive to changing and competing priorities

What you will do:


You will use your analytical, judgement and conceptual skills in the development and provision of reports and advice to meet reporting obligations.

You will demonstrate leadership and promote teamwork both within your team and across teams as required.

You may be responsible for leading a designated payroll team to deliver payroll services and to undertake systems administration as required.

You may also act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for designated functions.


You will be responsible for assisting in identifying, developing, implementing and reviewing business processes that improve the overall operational efficiency of the team.

Working to the Manager - Payroll, your responsibilities will include the following:

  • Lead and manage a designated payroll team ensuring deadlines and statutory obligations are effectively met
  • including processing of fortnightly pays, end of month and end of financial year activities and maintenance of accurate employee records.
  • Perform quality assure payroll processes at the end of each pay cycle to ensure employees are paid correctly, deduction authorities receive the required information, and the reconciliation of fortnightly pays is completed.
  • Coach and manage team members to develop their skills and oversee their workload including:
  • providing clarity around roles, expectations and responsibilities. Engage in performance discussions, identify and facilitate training and development opportunities.
  • Identify and promote onthejob training (OJT) opportunities
  • Work with counterparts in the Aurion Systems team and within DISR IT and undertake functions and activities to ensure the system is maintained to meet business requirements.
