- Significant Chair appointment in the State of Victoria
- Lead the Board to improve the experience of legal services and lawyer's ethics
- Governor in Council Appointment
About the Board
The Victorian Legal Services Board and Commissioner (VLSB+C) is the independent regulator of the legal profession in Victoria. We license lawyers and oversee service standards and conduct. This includes handling complaints about lawyers, investigating poor conduct and overseeing management of trust accounts. We are also the stewards of the Public Purpose and Fidelity Funds and administer these to support legal regulation and access to justice in Victoria.
The Regulatory Approach Statement provides a clear statement of how the organisation seeks to perform its role as regulators of the legal profession in Victoria.
About the role
The Chairperson's responsibilities involve leading the Board to focus on achieving the strategic objectives and fulfill its obligations under the Legal Profession Uniform Law (Victoria) and the Legal Profession Uniform Law Application Act 2014.
The position is the primary point of contact and conduit of information between the Board and the CEO and duties include liaising with, and reporting to, the Attorney-General on key issues, including succession planning for the CEO and Board members.
The Board is highly collegiate and engaged and the next Chairperson should chair in a manner that enables the contribution of all Board members and results in consensus (where possible) and commitment to Board decisions.
Board appointments are for a term of up to 4 years and can be renewed. The role attracts fixed remuneration per Schedule A of the Victorian Government's Appointment and Remuneration Guidelines.
The successful applicant will be subject to pre-appointment probity and declaration of private interests conducted by the Department of Justice and Community Safety,
Capabilities and experience sought
The current Chairperson will be retiring in early 2025, so the VLSB is seeking a new Chairperson who has previous experience as a Chair of a relevant Board.
The appointee will have a proven reputation in the State of Victoria known for their highest standards of ethics and professional and personal integrity.
Success in the role requires an understanding of the operation and regulatory environment of the legal profession and an appreciation of the needs of consumers of legal services.
In support of the current culture, we seek a leader who is collaborative and able to promote robust and respectful conversations with highly skilled Board members relying on influence without dominating.
Experience working with or exposure to the public sector is expected. Completion of a Company Directors' course will be well regarded.
Please review the position description for all requirements. Noting changes to the position should be expected reflecting changes in the organisation's goals and priorities, activities or position focus.
VLSB+C is committed to equal employment opportunity, ethical practice, diversity, inclusion and providing reasonable adjustments for persons with disabilities.
