About the Opportunity


Strathfield Council is seeking a Place Planning Coordinator to join Council's Planning Place and Development team to deliver significant improvements to the public domain through collaboration and delivery of urban design and place-making projects and additionally, to motivate, coach, inspire and lead a group of planning professionals in the provision of specialist town planning and development control advice.


The position entails the following duties:

  • Be a leader in the Planning, Place and Development team providing specialist advice on statutory and strategic planning matters and engaging with various stakeholders, including neighbouring Council's, State Government departments, to achieve desirable planning outcomes for the future;
  • Play a key role within the Planning, Place and Development team inspiring others to value design excellence, heritage, place making and liveability;
  • Observe and implement principles and objectives of the Strathfield Local Strategic Planning Statement, Strathfield LEP, DCPs and policies where the opportunity presents;
  • Focus on the continual development of robust and innovative landuse strategies to ensure sustainable and responsible planning and development for all aspects of our community;
  • Lead, coach, mentor and inspire the best technical advice on heritage, urban design, liveability and placemaking in the project development lifecycle;
  • Support the Planning, Place and Development Manager in building and developing an elite, highfunctioning and strong performing Planning, Place and Development team which is highly regarded and respected by the Strathfield community and external agencies and stakeholders;
  • Seek out best practice and innovation within the field of Landuse planning;
  • Investigate and develop funding options for Planning, Place and Development projects.

About you

  • Tertiary qualifications in Urban Design (or urbanism), either as undergraduate or post graduate in continuation from a base degree in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Urban Planning, or recognised equivalently related design field, including registration or eligibility for registration as a member of the respective professional association;
  • Proven ability to utilise and implement modern planning and best practice initiatives and innovative strategies; Experience in project management and managing consultants within scope and budget;
  • Experience or demonstrated skills in preparing built form controls, guidelines, development control plans and other designrelated policies; Experience in delivering graphic communication documentation using Adobe Creative Suite, AutoCAD, SketchUp (or similar) and Microsoft Office;
  • Demonstrated high quality written, graphic and verbal communication and interpersonal skills; Working knowledge of current trends and opportunities for strategic planning, place planning, heritage, sustainability and urban design;
  • Demonstrated experience working in a team environment and managing a range of projects simultaneously including strong time management skills, monitoring and reporting across all stages of the project delivery process.
