Council Overview
Strathfield Council (Council) is a medium sized Council located in Sydney's Inner West.

The area of the Council comprises approximately 14 square kilometres and has an estimated population of 46,000 residents, which is growing at 2.5-3% annually.

Based on NSW Government projections, the population will increase to over 80,000 by 2036.

About the Opportunity
Strathfield Council is seeking a Student Planner to assist in adding value to our blossoming Planning and Development team. The commencement for this role will be in January 2024.

Reporting to an experienced Landuse Planning and Operations Coordinator, you will be tasked with:

  • The assessment, appraisal, processing, and reporting of a variety of Development Applications and Modification Applications
  • Providing accurate written and verbal advice regarding land use, zoning, planning legislation, Council policy and procedures
  • Sound time management and organisational skills
  • Meeting the needs of customers (internal and external), to project and promote the image of Council as an efficient, competent, and courteous organisation
  • Ensuring that all enquiries are answered in a timely manner, as per Council's policies
  • Follow Council's policies and procedures when carrying out work to ensure risks are managed. Report all incidents, risks, and issues to Landuse Planning and Operations Coordinator in a timely manner
  • Other duties as directed by the Landuse Planning and Operations Coordinator and Manager Landuse, Place and Development that are within the scope of your skills and training.

About you


You will enjoy working in a fast-paced environment, which will both challenge and develop your skills as a Student Planner.


You will be a strong communicator with the ability to work seamlessly within a team and feel a sense of reward and ownership within your role.


  • Currently studying at university and completing a relevant degree related to planning with a good academic record
  • Current Class C Drivers Licence
  • Experience in dealing with a range of customers and providing quality customer service
  • Experience and ability to work in a team environment
  • Demonstrated experience in report writing
  • Ability to analyse planning reports and proposals with attention to detail
  • Effective time management skills
  • Ability to interpret planning legislation and Council's policies and procedures (Desirable)
  • Ability to problem solve (Desirable)
