About MATES


MATES was established in 2008, MATES are an evidenced-based organisation who provides suicide prevention through community development programs on-site, and by supporting workers in need through case management and a 24/7 helpline.

MATES serves the construction industry in Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia, and Western Australia, the Energy industry in Queensland and New South Wales, nationally to the Mining industry, and the Manufacturing industry pilot underway.

The program was developed from a solid evidence base provided by the Australian Institute of Suicide Research and Prevention:

  • The AISRAP Report_.


MATES vision is to be Australia's leading industry suicide prevention organisation focusing on raising awareness, building capacity, providing help and research.


The Role - General Manager in Mining, Energy & Manufacturing


Reporting to the CEO and Board, General Manager in Mining, Energy & Manufacturing is responsible for leading and promoting the MATES in Mining, MATES in Energy, and MATES in Manufacturing programs across Australia.

General Manager in Mining, Energy & Manufacturing will grow the footprint of MATES in Mining and Energy throughout the Australian Mining and Energy industries in accordance with agreed strategic objectives.


As General Manager in Mining, Energy & Manufacturing you will:

  • Build and manage relationships with Employers, Unions, employer associations and other industry and government stakeholders.
  • In collaboration with MATES Australia CEO and the Advisory Boards, Grow a sustainable funding base.
  • Manage and promote the deployment of MATES Program
  • Attendance of interstate conferences, networking events and Board meetings
  • Host events, presentations, and public speaking
  • Appraise training material for programs.
  • Maintain and develop national funding and sponsorship agreements.
  • P&L analysis, budget creation and financial management

Your Skills and Attributes

  • Previous senior leadership and change management experience.
  • Experience and/or qualifications within the mental health, suicide prevention or notforprofit sector is strongly desirable
  • High level of communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to consult, negotiate and advocate
  • Proven success in internal and external stakeholder management
  • Demonstrated experience in policy development and governance.
  • Ability to deploy programs successfully and confidently speak in public.
  • Experience and/or qualifications in workplace safety, mental health, or suicide prevention
  • Knowledge of construction, mining, and energy
  • Capability to regularly travel.
  • Strategic mindset, with highly developed problemsolving skills.
  • Financial Management and budgeting with a strong capability to analyse P&L statements.
  • Ability to work autonomously, as well as part of a team
