A little bit about us


The Aviation Environment Branch provides a regulatory and advisory function to airports to ensure they comply with their obligations to manage the airport environment in accordance with relevant federal regulations and standards.

The Environmental Regulation Section oversees the work of our team of environmental scientists, who use their strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills to work as Airport Environment Officers (AEOs).

Supported by our team of policy and regulatory experts in Canberra, AEOs work at 19 airports nationwide.

They exercise regulatory functions under the Airports Act 1996 and the Airports (Environment Protection) Regulations 1997, monitor the implementation of Airport Environment Strategies and liaise with airport officials and their tenants on environmental issues.

The Hub Manager leads a small team of AEOs to provide regulatory oversight of environmental protection and management at a small number of leased federal airports, known as a hub.

We seek motivated, flexible team-oriented Assistant Directors with strategic policy, stakeholder engagement, and/or regulatory experience to lead one of our Airport Environment Officer (AEO) Network Hubs.


AEOs exercise regulatory functions under the Airports Act 1996 and the Airports (Environment Protection) Regulations 1997, monitor the implementation of Airport Environment Strategies, and liaise with airports and their tenants on environmental issues.

Hub Managers exercise AEO regulatory functions and also manage the resources and workload of an AEO Hub, while mentoring and supporting network staff and contributing to the overall strategic direction of the Environmental Regulation Section.


What will you do?*:

This role is varied and dynamic, but typical duties include:

  • Providing strategic leadership of a small team of AEOs to deliver high quality regulatory outcomes on environmental matters at a number of leased federal airports, including providing timely and detailed advice on regulatory issues;
  • Mentoring, guiding, and supervising a small team of remoteworking AEOs;
  • Contributing to strong levels of regulatory compliance, enforcement, and reporting while engaging consistently and appropriately with risk;

  • Fostering and maintaining strong relation
  • Ships with key stakeholders across the sector and being a point of contact on airport environment matters for the airport community; and
  • Providing annual and other leave relief for AEOs.

Hub Managers are required to:

  • Be a responsive point of contact for airports within their hub;
  • Drive timely decisionmaking by AEOs by providing advice and support to the AEOs within their hubs;
  • Understand workloads of individual AEOs to ensure pressure points can be responded to and any resourcing gaps are and filled identified early;
  • Embed jurisdictionally relevant expertise and problem solving within hubs;
  • Ensure implementation of the strategic direction of the network within the hub (as developed and disseminated from the Director and Canberra support team);
  • Ensure issues that need to be considered at the whole of network scale e.g. for policy or regulatory consideration are escalated; and
  • Broadly understand the Airport Environment Strategy for the airports with in the Hub and provide guidance on environmental assessment of the Annual Environment Report and response to the ALC, and assessment of Major Development Plans and input into department assessment.
