- Hydrographic, Electronic and Data Technical Assistant - Hobart
We will teach you the how, you will bring the enthusiasm
What you’ll do:
This is a new role in our Water Management Team where you will learn how to provide operational support to the team in the day-to-day collection of hydrological, meteorological, environmental, and asset monitoring data services.
You will be supported with on-the-job and formal technical training to ensure you are an integral member of the team. You will be provided with professional development opportunities so you can work towards becoming a certified practicing hydrographer with the Australian Hydrographers Association.
What will your week look like?
If you like variety and being outside keep reading. Each week will be a bit different, so you will need to be a bit flexible, some weeks could include multiple days in the field carrying and using hydrographer monitoring equipment. Other weeks would consist of inputting the data collected back at the Moonah office or assisting with preparation of future installations.
You will get to travel the state so you need a driver's licence, and you will always be working with at least one other person when in the field, so you have amazing opportunities to learn from dedicated mentors.

What you’ll bring:
We will teach you what you need to know but there are a few things that will set you apart:
- You may have already started studying in a technical field related to hydrographic, hydrometric or data capture fields.
- You might also be studying within the civil, water, electrical or mechanical fields at university or TAFE.
- You have experience working outdoors in a range of weather conditions such as a wildlife guide, bushwalking or other construction work.
- You will need to demonstrate an appropriate level of fitness enabling you to embrace and enjoy the outdoor work you would do.
- Confidence around water and ability to swim.
- Willingness to complete a Cert IV Water Resources or Civil Engineering or Electronics at TAFE.
- Construction White Card or willingness to complete the 1-day training to get it.
If you have done any of the following, we also want to know about it:
- 4WD experience
- Experience using hand tools or power tools
- Ability to work with a team that relies on each other in the field.

We can’t wait for you to join our team as a Principal Engineer - Dams/Civil and bring your fresh perspective to the team. This role will give you the opportunity to work on diverse projects including wind, solar, battery storage, pumped hydro and utilities works (transmission and distribution substations, switchyards and lines) for a broad range of clients.
You will work with, and actively contribute to an effective and experienced team who will help you to further develop your skills and knowledge.
You have a background working in the energy sector experience in the following areas:
- 12-15 years’ experience.
- Tertiary qualifications in civil or environmental engineering, science or hydrology as required for admission as a member of Engineers Australia or equivalent.
- Strong experience with Australian hydrological and hydraulic practices including current design guidelines and standards.
- Strong hydrologic modelling and flood forecasting skills using a range of standard industry software.
- Strong programming skills (preferably in R or Python) applied to hydrology projects.
- Advanced statistical skills related to design flood hydrology, including flood frequency approaches, and total probability methods for Monte Carlo samping on multiple reservoirs.
- Analysis of impacts of climate change and climate variability on water availability.
- Use of semi-distributed or lumped conceptual rainfall-runoff models (eWater Source, RORB, HEC-HMS or similar) for event based and continuous simulation.
- Familiar with model calibration approaches for both event based and continuous simulation hydrological models.

The role involves supervising and coordinating work of more junior team members providing technical support, maintain relationships with existing clients and be the interface between Entura and respective client, act as the Technical Lead for connection application studies, Generator Performance Standards (GPS) compliance assessments, model overlays and model validation in PSSE and PSCAD and Project management of smaller projects.
You have experience in the following areas:
- 10+ years’ experience.
- Tertiary qualifications in Electrical Engineering.
- Practical experience of 7+ years, predominantly in the space of grid connections, Generator Performance Standards (GPS) compliance assessments, power system studies.
- Has worked on both connection applications for a number of years as well as hold point testing, GPS compliance assessments and model overlays, and is well aware of regulatory requirements.
- Ideally CPEng, RPEQ, RPEV credentials.
- Able to diagnose and trouble-shoot independently (both in software PSSE, PSCAD, Python, etc as well as technical issues, i.e. understand the underlying real world physics).
- Modelling software experience using:
- PSSE essential
- PSCAD essential
- Powerfactory
- SINCAL highly desired
- Python and Matlab highly desired
