Castlereagh School is seeking three (3) dedicated Education Assistants - Special Needs to join their team.

We currently have the following positions available :

2x - nine (9) month fixed term, full-time positions 1x - nine (9) month fixed term, part-time (0.4FTE) position

All positions will commence Term 2, 2024

Castlereagh School motivates children and young adults aged four to eighteen in a vibrant, nurturing, educational environment. Dedicated staff teach a range of quality programs which are specialised, individualised and specifically tailored to each student's individual needs and abilities.

Teachers and Education Assistants are highly trained and competent to design, implement and evaluate programs for students with diagnosed disability and high support needs.

All students have complex communication and learning needs and are provided with a well-balanced educational experience with a Literacy and Communication focus. Classrooms have a high ratio of staff to students. Classroom numbers are kept small to ensure that each child is given every opportunity to succeed.

As an Education Assistant - Special Needs, under teacher direction, you will assist in targeted education programs and in promoting a supportive and inclusive learning environment for all our students.

The successful applicants will assist the teacher in the delivery of planned education programs to assist students with complex communication and learning needs to reach their full potential through the development of communication, social, emotional, physical and academic skills. Using your ideally excellent interpersonal and communication skills, you will collaborate with teachers and other colleagues to create an inclusive education program that accommodates the needs of all students.

The successful applicants should possess a commitment to building positive relationships with students, parents, staff and the wider community and ideally be able to display the ability to deliver planned education programs and contribute to the evaluation process for special education. It is desirable for applicants to possess good written and oral communication skills and be competent in the use of Information Technology (IT) to assist teachers in the classroom.

The successful applicants who have experience with positive behaviour support; Augmentative and Alternative Communication systems, e.g. Key Word Sign, PODD (Pragmatic Organisation Dynamic Display); and work closely with teachers and other professionals in supporting optimal learning environments for every student are encouraged to apply.

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):

Effective written and oral communication skills, including report writing and the ability to effectively interact with students with special needs, and liaise with parents, teachers and community members and assist teachers in understanding students where necessary. Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to contribute to a professional team and provide advice and evaluation in the development of the education program, including special education and therapy programs where they have been implemented. Ability to assist professionals in the implementation and evaluation of education programs, including special education and, if required, occupational and/or physiotherapy programs. Knowledge and understanding of health and physical disabilities in students and adolescents. Effective organisational skills that will assist in the delivery of effective education programs and subsequent feedback and evaluation to teachers or psychologists. Ability to assist with the general health and wellbeing of students.
