Melbourne, Australia Australian Energy Market Operator Full time

AEMO at the Heart of Energy

AEMO is Australia’s independent energy system and market operator and system planner.  AEMO’s purpose is to ensure safe, reliable and affordable energy today, and enable the energy transition for the benefit of all Australians.  Australian governments are now committed to a net zero economy for Australia by 2050 and our vision is to enable this. We have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to co-design the future of our energy systems, and our core values revolve around character, commitment, and connection. Join us as we contribute to this significant transition in the energy sector.

AEMO’s System Design division is responsible for planning the power system in the context of unprecedented transformation. The rapid transition to renewable energy generation and electrification of many sectors (transport, industry etc) has seen sharp rises in proposed transmission connection projects. Victorian Network Services & Delivery is a Department within AEMO’s System Design Division with the key objective to delivery Victorian electricity transmission projects in the long-term interests of consumers. Critical to the achievement of this objective is program management to support the development and implementation of infrastructure projects to meet those needs (including procurement processes and contract management).

About the role
This role will support the Lead – Land, Planning and Environment to provide governance over the delivery of all planning and environmental approvals for the Western Renewables Link (WRL) Project to be undertaken by AEMO’s delivery partner. The WRL is a proposed 190km overhead 500kV high-voltage transmission line between Bulgana, in western Victoria, and Sydenham in Melbourne’s north-west. The project is critical infrastructure required to unlock the renewable potential of western Victoria as a key renewable energy zone and will help to deliver clean and affordable energy to all Victorians.

What you will be doing

  • Evaluate proposed planning and environment approval activities against project delivery plans to ensure interdependent activities are understood and schedule risks are identified and communicated to the project team.
  • Provide governance over planning and environment activities undertaken by AEMO's delivery partner to ensure environmental impacts are minimised in-line with industry best-practice.
  • Provide oversight over the delivery of planning and environmental approvals to be undertaken by AEMO's delivery partner.
  • Ensure all risks associated with the delivery of planning and environmental approvals are promptly identified and effectively communicated to the project team.
  • Work with and coordinate activities with other WRL streams (Design, Stakeholder Engagement, Commercial) to meet quality, cost and time requirements.
  • Support the facilitation of multi-organisational working groups to ensure inputs from other relevant organisations and streams within AEMO are reflected within planning and environment plans.

What you will bring to the role

Education/ Certificates

  • Tertiary qualifications in town planning or environmental science
  • Driver’s licence required.

Experience and Knowledge

  • Demonstrated experience in the preparation and delivery of planning and environmental approvals for major linear infrastructure (e.g. rail, road, gas, electricity).
  • Sound demonstrated and working knowledge of statutory planning assessments and legislation as they relate to major linear infrastructure projects (Victorian-specific knowledge preferred).
  • Thorough understanding of the interplay between the various elements of land use planning, infrastructure provision, economic and environmental sustainability, with a demonstrated ability to consolidate these into strategies and plans that are capable of being implemented.
  • Prior experience working with jurisdictional stakeholders (e.g. State/Federal bodies)
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Well-developed interpersonal, negotiation and complex problem-solving capabilities

In return some of our benefits to you

  • Flexible working: hybrid options, and additional leave options
  • Professional development via projects, industry networks, job rotation, study assistance and more.
  • Give back with up to 4 days of volunteering leave per year.
  • Reward your hard work with annual performance bonuses (subject to eligibility).
  • Embrace a healthier you with our wellness program, discounted health insurance, gym perks and our comprehensive Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
