1. About the role 

The University of Melbourne English Language Bridging Program (UMELBP) is a direct entry program run by Hawthorn-Melbourne as a pathway into degree programs at the University of Melbourne. Through this program, students have an opportunity to improve their English to satisfy University language requirements, as well as acquire skills and knowledge essential to success in their future studies.

The Director of Studies (DoS) UMELBP is the leader of this program, reporting to the Principal, Hawthorn-Melbourne, and working in close collaboration with other key leaders at our school. The DoS UMELBP is tasked with overseeing the day-to-day running of the program, which includes supporting teachers, working to resolve student issues and completing admin tasks. The role is also central to curriculum and assessment review processes, and to ensuring compliance with relevant policies and standards.

3. Key Result Areas

Ensure the highest standard of service delivery on the UMELBP by:
▪ recruiting, inducting and mentoring UMELBP Team Leaders and teachers.
▪ modelling high standards of work performance.
▪ providing staff with appropriate and specific day-to-day direction on course curricula, materials, classroom practices, and support in addressing student issues.
▪ managing Team Leaders effectively, including delegation of non-teaching tasks.
▪ contributing to a positive and supportive workplace culture.
▪ working to address concerns raised by students, staff and other stakeholders.
▪ maintaining high teaching standards, including via classroom observations.
▪ maintaining the reliability and integrity of course assessment results, including via standardisation, invigilation and moderation practices.
▪ prioritising and completing key administrative tasks (e.g. class allocation, teacher contracts, pay reports).
▪ liaising with key stakeholders at the University of Melbourne to ensure their needs are met.
▪ contributing to reports and presentations for both internal and external stakeholders
▪ undertaking evidence-based course reviews, including for accreditation purposes.
▪ engaging in part-time/cover teaching, as required.
▪ completing other duties, as directed by the Principal.

4. Compliance and Alignment

Ensures the UMELBP is delivered in compliance/alignment with:
▪The National Code and ELICOS Standards
▪Guidance given and requirements set by TEQSA
▪Guidance given and requirements set by the University of Melbourne
▪Hawthorn-Melbourne Enterprise Agreement 2022 and its successors

Contributes to the maintenance of client privacy by:
▪ensuring privacy regulations are understood and implemented
▪ensuring client records and personal information are stored securely according to Navitas privacy policies
▪cooperating with other Navitas staff and external agencies to comply with privacy regulations

Contributes to the maintenance of a safe working environment, by:
▪providing information, training and supervision necessary to ensure the health and safety of employees at the local workplace.
▪ensuring any issues are reported through the proper channels and resolved in a timely manner.
▪ensuring relevant occupational health and safety regulations and reporting requirements are complied with.

5.The person we seek will ideally have the following: 

Essential:
▪Relevant postgraduate qualifications (e.g. Master of Education, Graduate Diploma in TESOL).
▪Minimum 5 years' relevant TESOL teaching experience.
▪Dynamic, talented educator with high standards of written and spoken communication.
▪Excellent interpersonal skills, sensitive to staff and student needs.
▪Skilled and enthusiastic collaborator with ability to contribute to a positive workplace culture.
▪Diligent and organised administrator who is able to prioritise effectively.
▪Strong analytical and presentation skills.
▪Strong MS Office skills, including Outlook, Word and Excel.
▪Working with Children Check (or equivalent).

Desirable:
▪3+ years ELICOS management experience.
▪Experience in curriculum and materials development.
▪Experience in course administration and reporting.
▪Experience using student management systems (e.g. Becas).
▪Experience using learning management systems (e.g. Moodle).
▪Thorough understanding of relevant ELICOS industry regulatory frameworks.
