About the role

The Head of Department - English and Languages is responsible for the provision of inspirational educational leadership; creating a culture of excellence. This includes all aspects of learning, teaching, assessment, monitoring and curriculum development within the department, in harmony with the aims, philosophy, and strategic direction of the School. The Head of Department - English and Languages has the responsibility to manage staff, to be a role model to both staff and students, and to mentor teachers.

We are seeking to appoint a capable and dynamic Head of Department - English and Languages, with a deep knowledge of the Australian Curriculum and QCAA syllabus, and the capacity to lead staff in the development and implementation of English and Language programs and projects.

Key Responsibilities

You will be responsible for the leadership of teachers and the day-to-day management and coordination of the English and Languages Department. This includes managing change, developing teacher capacity and enhancing the interest and capability of girls from Years 7-12. 

The Head of Department - English and Languages role is a full-time, fixed-term position commencing in Term 1 2025. The teacher component of this position is a permanent position. Responsibilities of the role will include but not be limited to:

  • providing leadership in articulating, developing and committing to a shared educational vision for the School;
  • setting goals for department performance and track achievement against these goals over time;
  • developing and submitting an annual department budget and operational plan in response to the School’s strategic plan;
  • developing and leading excellence in learning, teaching, assessment, monitoring and curriculum;
  • developing and overseeing enrichment opportunities for students within the department’s teaching and learning areas;
  • ensuring the subject curriculum is compliant with the National and State curriculums, developmentally appropriate and aligned with Years 7-12;
  • ensuring the curriculum is current, quality-assured and accessible to department staff, students and parents, as appropriate;
  • supporting teachers in conjunction with learning support staff where appropriate to differentiate the curriculum to reflect the needs, interests and abilities of students in the subject area;
  • supporting teachers to implement Individual Education Programs in conjunction with learning support staff where appropriate;
  • overseeing the planning, preparation and review of courses and work programs in accordance with changes to National and State syllabus documents;
  • leading the development and engagement of learning resources in the department;
  • exemplifying exceptional teaching practices for optimal student learning;
  • participating in decision-making processes including overall curriculum planning and development; and
  • actively promoting and implementing these goals, priorities and policies.

About You

The successful applicant must be supportive of the ethos of Anglican Schools and must either be eligible for teacher registration or have registration with the Queensland College of Teachers. In addition, you will:

  • demonstrate effective organisational and time management skills, meet deadlines and display initiative;
  • be responsible and accountable for personal performance;
  • be able to work independently and with minimal supervision;
  • demonstrate effective IT skills appropriate for the position;
  • be committed to continue self-improvement through professional learning;
  • maintain a degree of flexibility in working hours from time to time as required for the position.
