West Perth, Australia Department of Education, Western Australia Full time

Advertised Vacancy Number: IPS/TCH898180

This is a twelve (12) month fixed term, part-time (0.8FTE) position commencing Term 1, 2025

Como Secondary College (SC) is seeking a teacher to deliver a specialist learning program to support students in Years 7 to 9, who are at risk in literacy and numeracy.

The successful applicant will work in a small team which is strongly supported by the school’s administration team. They will have the opportunity to develop high level teaching skills in a supportive environment in order to significantly improve the future of students at educational risk. Entry into mainstream classes is the ultimate aim for these students.

This program is gaining a well-deserved reputation for achieving outstanding improvement in students struggling with literacy and numeracy. The focus of the program is to get the students to experience success and achieve much higher rates of progress than they have previously achieved, to the extent that they are conscious of their own improvement.

Ideally the preferred applicant for this position will have:

The ability to establish and maintain strong, supportive relationships with the students and their families. Patience and resilience Ability to work in a team and collaborate with other staff. Experience in delivering Direct Instruction programs such as Corrective Reading and Spelling Mastery. Knowledge and understanding of the principles and theory underlying Direct Instruction. Experience in explicit instruction and an understanding of the principles of effective instruction. Qualifications in special education and/or teaching students at educational risk. Excellent data analysis skills to support the monitoring of student progress. Experience in, and a thorough understanding of, diagnostic testing. Experience in, and a thorough understanding of, standardised testing, particularly the ACER Progressive Achievement Tests (PAT). Excellent behaviour management skills.

Experience and study in these areas, while an advantage, is not vital – however a desire and ability to develop expertise in these areas is essential. Comprehensive professional development and on-the-job training will be provided. Applicants currently completing the Department of Education Leap Program and Graduates are encouraged to apply.

Como builds promising futures for our students through providing an excellent education and a rich range of curricula and extra-curricular opportunities. Central to the students’ experience at Como is a school culture that promotes learning. The school is driven by the deep belief that every student is capable of successful learning and that it is the responsibility of every teacher to ensure that all students progress. At Como every student matters. As a school and as teachers we don’t give up on students – we constantly explore new ways to engage students who are not making progress. The personal and familial attributes and circumstances relating to a student are not viewed as excuses for a student’s lack of academic and/or social progress. Instead they are viewed as challenges to be overcome.

In summary, Como is looking for a teacher who believes that success and failure in student learning is about what they do or not do, who see their job as unlocking the potential of their students. Adaptability, resilience and the ability to actively share and collaborate within a community of teachers will be seen as highly desirable characteristics.
