About the Rheumatology Department

The Austin Health Department of Rheumatology provides specialist non-surgical care and treatment, on an inpatient and outpatient basis, to patients with rheumatic illnesses involving problems with joint, soft tissues and autoimmune diseases arising from an inappropriate immune response of the body.  The Unit evaluates and treats all forms of arthritis and has a range of sub-speciality clinics.  The Unit is interested in the ways in which imaging may facilitate the diagnosis of autoimmune diseases, most recently ultrasound and PET/CT scanning.  These are being used to help diagnose polymyalgia rheumatic conditions as well as to service patient care with ultrasound guided glucocorticoid injections.

The Rheumatology Unit offers a range of sub-speciality Outpatient Clinics including General Rheumatology, Ankylosing Spondilytis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Rheumatology Orthopaedics, Scleroderma, Lupus, Systemic Autoimmune Diseases and Soft Tissue Injury.
