Canning College is seeking a highly motivated, dedicated, and suitably experienced Deputy Principal to join their leadership team.

In collaboration with the Principal and leadership team, the Deputy Principal will provide high level leadership by developing and actively promoting Canning College’s vision and strategic direction in the college and wider college community.

The successful candidate will ideally display the passion, leadership capabilities and professional knowledge that will enable Canning College to continue to be a university pathway provider of choice for international students. They will be an effective instructional leader who is able to work collaboratively with HOLAs and teachers to continually build on the curriculum and the teaching and learning programs that engage young adult learners and motivate students to succeed with their studies toward university entry. Importantly, they will display the ability to problem solve, innovate and implement strategies and programs that optimise student learning outcomes and expand and enrich the students’ college experience.

The successful candidate will ideally display highly effective communication skills and ability to establish and maintain productive partnerships with Canning College’s stakeholder groups and students from a broad range of nationalities and cultural backgrounds. They will ideally have a sound knowledge of the policy framework that regulates international education in Australian schools, and excellent attention to detail to ensure compliance with policy and reporting requirements. They will be invested in Canning College’s goal for international and local students to achieve success on their pathway to leading universities. They will ideally possess high standards of professionalism, display effective interpersonal skills and value working collaboratively with colleagues and stakeholders in Canning College’s unique educational context.

Canning College has been preparing students to achieve entry into Australia’s leading universities since 1982. As a specialist international education institution, it has established a very positive reputation for providing local and overseas students with the personal and academic development and pathways required to succeed in tertiary studies.

In the five years from 2019, the College’s expert staff focused exclusively on providing pathway-to-university programs for international students. Flexible entry points into Canning College’s academic pathway programs allow international students to start studying in January, April and mid-year, which gives them the opportunity to enter university degree courses sooner. In 2024, while Canning College’s focus on international students continues, the College has reinstated the enrolment of local (domestic) Year 10, Year 11, Year 12 and mature age students seeking entry to university, primarily through WA Certificate of Education ATAR courses.

Local and international students may enrol in Canning College’s Year 10 program, and Year 11 and Year 12 WACE ATAR programs. International students and eligible local students can also seek to complete the Certificate IV in University Access Program, Diploma of Commerce, and the Western Australian Universities’ Foundation Program (WAUFP). College staff are experienced in providing care, support and academic guidance to all students to help them prepare better for the rigours of tertiary studies.

While Canning College has a special relationship with the universities of Perth, college graduates can enrol at all universities across Australia and at many universities across the world. Canning graduates have studied at universities in Australia, England, Ireland, America, Canada, Germany, New Zealand, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Thailand, Korea and Singapore.

Canning College students pursue a wide range of degree courses including engineering, medicine, physiotherapy, education, law, pharmacy, nursing and computing.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position. 

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:

Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings; High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes; Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs). Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.
