Alfred Health Allied Health Directorate comprises a number of Allied Health disciplines (Interpreters, Nutrition, Occupational Therapy, Orthoptics, Pastoral Care, Patient & Family Services, Physiotherapy, Podiatry, Prosthetics & Orthotics, Psychology, and Speech Pathology) who provide patient centred care across all clinical programs that operate at Alfred Health. Allied Health disciplines provide patient centred care that will aim to optimise physical, psychosocial, communication and cognitive functioning. To ensure that the Allied Health workforce is fit for purpose, there is a robust governance structure that provides oversight of staff & student education, research, workforce innovation and quality & safety.
The Disability Liaison Officer Service and SPEAK Project
The DLO Service assists people with disability to access health services within Alfred Health, including vaccinations, assessment and treatment, and in-reach services. The DLO service works to address barriers that prevent people with disability from accessing health services including those of fear, uncertainty, and issues with accessibility.
The SPEAK (SPecialist Education And Knowledge) Project is a time-limited project, funded by a grant managed by the Department of Social Services. The aim of the SPEAK Project is to build capability in the health workforce and improve processes to meet the healthcare needs of people with disability, particularly those with intellectual disability, communication disability/communication support needs and those who are autistic. One of the activities of the SPEAK Project is to provide a rapid response Disability Liaison Officer service, situated in the Emergency Trauma Care (ET&C) setting at The Alfred.
The Role
The Disability Liaison Officer Grade 3 delivers a clinical service to people with disability at Alfred Health. They contribute to leadership of the Disability Liaison Officer (DLO) Service and will provide clinical supervision and support to Grade 2 DLO in both the inpatient settings, outpatient settings, and the Emergency & Trauma Centre (ET&C) teams. The Grade 3 DLO will identify and manage quality improvement and service development activities, and provide operational leadership to the team as directed.
Under supervision of the Allied Health Team Leader for the DLO service, the successful incumbent will use their knowledge and skills in communication, sensory and behavioural support, along with an understanding of the demands of health and disability services, to support improved outcomes for people with disability in both our inpatient, outpatient, and in the ET&C settings.
The role will suit someone with lived experience or understanding of intersectional identities, including LGBTIQ+, Aboriginal and CALD people with disability; and understanding of challenges delivering care in rural and regional areas.
Skills/Qualifications Required
Qualifications in nursing or an allied health discipline are desirable, but not essential. Strong consideration will be given to applicants who have qualifications in disability and appropriate employment experience. Applicants with lived experience of disability will be highly regarded, particularly those with experience or understanding of intersectional identities including LGBTIQ+, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, and CALD people with disability. Well-developed leadership skills, including in areas of continuous improvement, change implementation, and staff supervision. Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills – written and verbal. Knowledge and at least 5 years’ experience in supporting people with disabilities in health, disability and/or education settings.Staff Benefits
