Applications are invited for the full-time ongoing position of Senior Adviser or Adviser in the Office of the Dr Anne Aly MP, based in the Minister’s Office in Canberra, ACT or Perth, WA. 

Classification and scope of role will depend on the experience and relevant skill of the successful applicant. The successful applicant will fulfil a key role in the office, providing policy stewardship and astute political judgement across the breadth of the Minister’s portfolios. 

The Office is seeking a person who will work cohesively and collaboratively as part of a small team, has a high level of professionalism and integrity, and who has a deep commitment to doing work in service to the people of Australia.

ROLE DESCRIPTION 

Position Title: Senior Adviser/Adviser 

KEY OBJECTIVE 

To provide high quality advice and support to the Minister relating to policy, public administration and political matters.

DUTIES 

  1. Provide high quality, expert and timely advice on priority, complex and sensitive policy, public administration and political issues.
  2. Maintain effective relationships with the Prime Minister’s Office, other Ministerial Offices and the Australian Public Service on all priority, complex and sensitive issues. 
  3. Ensure that the resources of the portfolio department are effectively utilised to provide high level and appropriate advice and support to the Minister. 
  4. Assist in policy initiatives and research into the development of strategic policy responses. 
  5. Liaise with stakeholders to identify key issues in relation to policy requirements.
  6. Provide advice and support on parliamentary matters including Question Time, legislative processes and parliamentary business.
  7. Monitor and advise on legislative and policy developments in Australia and overseas. 
  8. Provide advice and support on policy issues in a wide variety of negotiations, meetings and consultations. 
  9. Liaise with the Australian Public Service in relation to the preparation of policy and legislative documents. 
  10. Analyse and prepare reports, papers, policy statements, briefing notes and statistical information on policy and related matters and significant portfolio initiatives. 
  11. Provide internal leadership and as required, manage and lead staff.
  12. Provide input into communications and political advice as required. 
  13. Regular interstate and/or Canberra travel will be required for this role

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA 

  • Demonstrated extensive experience in providing advice on a wide range of policy, administrative and political matters in a public, non-profit or private sector organisation.
  • Ability to communicate highly effectively and liaise with other Ministerial Offices, the Australian Public Service and the community, including varied constituencies. 
  • Experience in the processes of planning, organising and implementing research. Demonstrated experience in working in a dynamic environment as part of a team, as well as successfully managing staff. 
  • Developed knowledge of the political process and the Australian parliamentary and political system. 
  • An ability to work cooperatively to achieve whole of government strategic objectives. 
  • Demonstrated professional integrity and the ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality. 
  • Demonstrated capacity for applying analytical and problem solving skills in developing solutions for complex issues. 
  • Ability to rapidly acquire a sound knowledge of the structure and functions of the portfolio.
  • Proven reliability in meeting deadlines and commitments especially in high pressure situations.

Employment conditions: 

The position is offered under the Members of Parliament (Staff) Act 1984 and conditions are outlined in the Commonwealth Members of Parliament Staff Enterprise Agreement 2020-23 which include: 

  • Adviser commencing salary between $101,701 and $150,086 will be negotiated depending on experience and relevant skills; and 
  • An additional Personal Staff Allowance of $31,702 is payable in recognition of, and as compensation for, reasonable additional hours of work; or 
  • Senior Adviser commencing salary between $140,214 and $213,683 plus Private Vehicle (or Allowance of $25,082) will be negotiated depending on experience and relevant skills; and
  • An additional Personal Staff Allowance of $34,612 is payable in recognition of, and as compensation for, reasonable additional hours of work. 
  • Relocation assistance, studies assistance and paid study leave may also be available (subject to eligibility requirements). 
  • An employer superannuation contribution of 15.4% will be payable.

The successful applicant will be required to obtain and maintain an Australian Government security clearance (Negative Vetting Level 2) and comply with the Ministerial Staff Code of Conduct.
