Wollongong, Australia Bluescope Full time

Job Description

Come and discover the opportunity to join our Port Kembla Manufacturing facility as an Electrical Engineering Cadet. As a part of the broader Australian Steel Products portfolio, we have six major manufacturing sites at Port Kembla that deliver a variety of products, innovative solutions and services to our export and domestic customers.

Our Cadetship program at BlueScope creates an opportunity to accelerate your personal and professional growth as you combine paid work with study; a two-for-one situation placing you far ahead of your peers Cadetships provide a combination of part-time study and part-time work, where you will attend university classes one day a week.

Working within highly skilled and supportive teams, and under the guidance of experienced engineers and technical specialists, you will gain exposure to a range of areas and projects across the business relating to your degree. You will also be able to apply the practical skills and knowledge acquired from BlueScope back into your engineering studies.

Our Cadetships will commence in January 2025.

What Will You Do?

Working with, and under the guidance of experienced electrical engineers and tradespeople, you’ll gain exposure to our equipment and the production lifecycle. These formative years of your engineering journey are invaluable, as you’re involved in designing and managing improvements to the manufacturing assets within the steelworks. We’ll support you while you work toward obtaining your Certificate III in Electrotechnology as well as studying Engineering at University.

With ongoing mentoring and guidance, you’ll work within multidisciplinary teams, involved in design and specification; construction and commissioning; and process support and improvement. This amazing opportunity is focused on equipping you with the skills that will lead you into a long-term career, becoming a professional electrical and automation engineer or providing you an opportunity to progress into other areas.

Rotating through various departments, you’ll gain an appreciation of the steel-making process through trying a bit of everything electrical such as designing and constructing electrical machinery and carrying out plant maintenance; allowing you to find the perfect fit for your BlueScope boots. To give you a strong foundation, your rotations will allow you to experience exactly what you’re studying at uni.

More About You

We would love to hear from you if you find yourself answering ‘yes’ to the below:

  • are you an aspiring future-focused engineer?
  • are you available to kickstart your journey at BlueScope from January 2025?
  • do you want to be a part of an organisation where you’ll not only shape how we work, and the products we produce, but you will help shape the world in which we live – for the better?

Enthusiastic to embark on your engineering journey, you’ll have the desire to grow and develop yourself as an engineer, along with a commitment to the safety of yourself and others.

You’ll thrive working within a team, willingly collaborate and share ideas, and actively contribute to your team’s success.

You’ll currently be in your first or second year of study in electrical engineering at the University of Wollongong (UOW) or be willing to transfer to UOW for the year commencing 2025.

Please note, it is a requirement to upload a copy of your resume and academic transcript as part of your application.

What’s in it for me?

Learn real-world skills related to your studies. You’ll gain a head start in your career journey, allowing you to realise your ambitions. You’ll work in key areas within BlueScope while studying at one of Australia’s leading universities.

Real projects and delivering real results. Rotating through various departments, you'll be exposed to different aspects of engineering relative to where you’re at in your studies.

Ongoing development and opportunities. Our development programs aim to invest in you and your personal growth, allowing you to be the best version of yourself. Our BlueScope cadetship will equip you with a strong foundation to excel in your chosen field, possessing the capabilities sought by future employers.

Earn while you learn. Our cadetships offer you employment on a competitive salary while providing financial support for your studies. Each week you are given time to attend university, as well as allocated time to sit exams.

Strong support network. Our experienced leaders and professionals actively mentor you, sharing valuable knowledge and experience to ensure you are set up for success whilst feeling empowered to achieve your goals and personal growth aspirations.

Since its inception almost 50 years ago, hundreds of students have been through our cadetship program, and have developed and grown throughout our business to become our future leaders.
