The Opportunity
Contributing to managing a unique array of radio telescopes in the southern hemisphere, this role will see you undertake high-quality research of international standing, publish findings, and supervise research higher degree students to completion. Delivering exemplary undergraduate and postgraduate coursework teaching and providing leadership in key areas within the discipline will lead to consistently exceeding the University’s research performance expectations. You will offer people focussed academic leadership, particularly in team building and fostering outstanding research and teaching, while supporting the career development of junior staff. To enhance the technical capabilities of UTAS radio infrastructure for both scientific and commercial projects, you will secure external funding from competitive grants and industry partners. Developing and maintaining productive links within the University and with local, national, and international communities will enable you to contribute to the University’s ongoing and sustainable future.
What’s Required
As a distinguished academic leader with a PhD or equivalent in astronomy or a closely related field, you will bring to the role a substantial record of internationally recognised research in radio astronomy. Evidenced by delivering high-quality publications, conference presentations and effective industry emersion, success in securing competitive funding will be the key in enabling the University to achieve ongoing sustainable outcomes. In addition, you will bring to the role:
- Expertise in University-level teaching and learning.
- Demonstrated ability to foster excellence in both research and teaching.
- A strong commitment to mentorship, with a proven track record of supervising and completing research higher degree students.
- Ability to build effective working relationships and lead teams.
- Maintain productive links with the discipline, profession, industry, and wider community.
- A history of engaging with organizations outside academia to transition technology from basic to applied domains for societal benefit is highly desirable.
- Demonstrate a commitment to fostering equity, diversity, and inclusivity within a safe and respectful work environment

The University of Tasmania’s radio telescopes have been tracking, monitoring and studying space since 1985. Today, we provide commercial and scientific support to explore near and deep space. From our small island, we have supported landings on Titan, tracking for lunar missions, and orbit determination of spacecraft.
