Job Description
KPMG's Climate Change & Sustainability service is focussed on assisting a wide variety of Australian and international clients to understand and optimise their organisational response to the challenges and opportunities of climate change, carbon management and emission reduction.
We work with leading organisations across industries and sectors (including financial services, extractives, power, utilities, retail, manufacturing, infrastructure and government) and deliver a wide range of exciting, action-orientated services including:
- Climate-related risk and opportunity assessments and scenario analysis.
- Climate hazard modelling and financial quantification of climate risks and opportunities.
- Carbon baselining for operational and financed emissions.
- Decarbonisation, target setting and net-zero strategies.
- Integration of climate strategy into sustainability, risk management and corporate processes.
- Development of innovative and practical recommendations to manage climate risk and maximise opportunities in the low carbon economy.
- Managing and reporting on climate, carbon and GHG data and developing KPIs.
- Assurance of sustainability reports and metrics, including for greenhouse gasses.
- Supporting the development of climate related disclosures in alignment with various frameworks and standards (ASRS, IFRS S1 & S2 and TCFD).

In response to growing client demand for our services, there is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Carbon Management professional to join our team in Brisbane as an Associate Director (8-9 years’ relevant experience).

- Substantial experience and comfort leading and delivering complex GHG emissions baselining projects for scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions (scope 3 is essential), including identifying organisation and operational boundaries for organisational structures and activities, assessing data needs and quality enhancement opportunities, developing emissions inventories for operational and, ideally, financed emissions, based on common methodologies and preparing basis of preparation.
- Experience and capability developing decarbonisation and related targets based on leading international frameworks and standards (SBTi, NZ alliances, Climate Active and others), supported by associated data analysis and modelling.
- Substantial experience developing robust and bespoke decarbonisation and Net Zero strategies for corporations and financial services organisations, from options identification and assessment, financial quantification and impact analysis, through to design of abatement opportunities and implementation plans. Experience operationalising and embedding those strategies, transition plans and action agendas across organisational functions and stakeholders.
- Sound knowledge and comfort of carbon accounting and decarbonisation technology platforms, ideally based on previous project experience.
- Strong proficiency in the Greenhouse Gas Protocol suite of standards, Partnership for Carbon Accounting Financials (PCAF) standards, Net Zero alliance and other common carbon accounting frameworks and target setting requirements for corporates and financial institutions.
- Willingness to provide subject matter expertise on sustainability and greenhouse gas reporting and assurance engagements.
- Knowledge of other technical and regulatory developments in relation to climate change and carbon, including an awareness of global and domestic frameworks (IPCC, UNFCCC, NGERs, Safeguard Mechanism etc) and established and emerging standards (ASSB, ISSB, TCFD etc), highly desirable.
- Highly developed written and verbal communication skills, particularly when communicating on an engagement to a wide range of stakeholders from senior management to project managers.
- Strong ability to engage with senior-level clients (e.g., Heads of) and develop meaningful relationships to aid in business development.
- Strong people skills, with a demonstrated track record of successfully leading, inspiring and working with teams, including the ability to mentor and develop junior team members.
- Demonstrated capability to lead and manage multiple projects in parallel, effectively planning and overseeing teams and providing technical guidance, input and structuring, to deliver excellent, high-quality outcomes according to timelines and budgets.
- High levels of motivation and initiative to take ownership of projects and opportunities and see them through to completion.
- Appropriate tertiary qualification (science, engineering, carbon management, environment, sustainability, environmental economics), with Master’s degree level desirable.
- Experience in a consultancy or in industry, with technical expertise in carbon and decarbonisation, particularly for corporates and financial services organisations.
