YOUR ROLE IN OUR FUTURE

 Part Time Fixed Term Role. 

We are seeking an experienced and compassionate Senior Mental Health Nurse to join our Psychosocial Oncology Team at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. In this role, you will be integral in providing specialized mental health care to oncology patients.

This role is part time 48 hours per fortnight fixed for 1 year 

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Clinical Liaison Psychiatry Nursing: Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality psychiatric care in both an inpatient and outpatient setting. Providing expert assessments, care planning, advice and interventions for patients requiring mental health support during their cancer treatment
  • Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Work closely with a diverse team of healthcare professionals to deliver comprehensive patient care.
  • Therapeutic Relationships: Build and maintain supportive, therapeutic relationships with patients, enhancing their overall well-being.
  • Telephone Triaging and Assessments: Conduct telephone triaging and assessments to evaluate patient needs and prioritize care effectively.
  • Role Development: Contribute to the development and enhancement of the mental health nurse role within the psychosocial oncology setting.
  • Education and Support: Provide education and support to patients and their families, as well as the multidisciplinary team, regarding mental health conditions and treatment options
  • Documentation and Compliance: Maintain accurate and timely documentation of patient interactions and adhere to relevant policies and proceedures. You may also be required to take part in steering committees and groups to help guide and develop Peter Mac policies and proceedures in relevant circumstances (ie developing nursing pathways for dealing with challenging behaviours)

Key Requirements:

  • Qualifictions: Registered Nurse with current AHPRA registration and relevant nursing qualifications
  • Experience: Demonstrated at least 4 years previous experience in a senior mental health nrusing role, in either an inpatient, crisis or community setting
  • Skills: Strong clinical assessment skills, excellent communication abilities, and the capacity to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
  • Commitment: A genuine interest in enhancing metal health care and a commitment to ongoing professional development

Position Summary

The Psychiatric Liaison Nurse (PCLN) is a member of the Psychosocial Oncology Program (POP). The (PCLN) provides expert psychiatric consultation to patients at Peter Mac.

This includes:

  • Triaging initial referrals to the Psychosocial Oncology Program to establish suitability and urgency
  • Coordination of Psychiatric Triage including the Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT)
  • The provision of clinical nursing support as part of the Psychosocial Oncology team
  • Provide  psychiatric nursing interventions on the inpatient wards
  • Provision of clinical consultation as required

Essential Requirements

  • Registered Nurse
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in nursing at a senior level
  • An understanding of and experience with developing evidence-based practice
  • Demonstrated involvement in professional activities and organisations 
  • High level of clinical expertise in the application of psychiatric nursing
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of mental health issues within the general health (consultation-liaison) setting
  • Experience in working within a triage model of mental health care delivery for general hospital patients
  • Demonstrated experience in the provision and delivery of education and training to non-psychiatric trained clinicians 
  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively as part of the multidisciplinary team and with multiple key stakeholders

Desirable Requirements

  • A Master’s degree in Nursing or a relevant field or working towards
  • Experience working in Oncology.
  • Experience in conducting nursing-based quality improvement activities or research

  • The PCLN contributes to the POP MDT meetings
  • Provide a regular report on triage, including referral numbers and patterns, as well as outcomes, to Head of Psychiatric Liaison Nurses.
  • Peter Mac Nursing is represented and contributes to the development of evidence-based position statements or papers, recommendations and guidelines where appropriate both nationally and internationally 
  • To work together with the other members of the psychosocial oncology team to ensure that services are provided to meet patient’s mental health needs in a timely fashion
  • To provide a link between specialised psychosocial oncology services, other Peter Mac hospital departments, and external agencies, to ensure continuity of care to clients, families and carers, including making appropriate referrals to specialist psychiatric services
  • To assist in discharge planning for patients with mental health/ behavioural problems
  • Act as a resource for external healthcare providers and members of the community seeking assistance for individuals with cancer with mental health problems

2. Screening and Assessment

  • To triage, escalate, and prioritise referrals for the Psychosocial Oncology Program, establishing the most appropriate response and / or follow-up and urgency of the referral
  • Referrals are triaged by end of next business day 
  • Evidence based assessment tools are completed for new patients and referrals made, as required
  • Demonstrates expertise in clinical assessment skills and care planning for patients with complex physical and psychosocial needs
  • To collaboratively assist nursing staff in the development and implementation of appropriate care plans for patients with behavioural / mental health needs
  • Supports other nurses to develop expert clinical assessment skills and develop individualised care plans
  • Assess associated risk of patients being Psychiatric Nurse Specialled and liaise with the Special Nurse to promote communication between other multidisciplinary team members

3. Improving Quality and Safety of our services

  • Evidence of involvement in the development and/or recognition and/or evaluation of evidence based patient education resources
  • Evidence of delivery of high quality education 
  • Evidence of participation in relevant committees and professional groups
  • Collection of nurse sensitive data that can be used to inform practice change.  Examples may include the following:
    o    Code Grey audit
    o    Physical restraint audit
  • Evidence of contributing to/being involved in at least one research/QA project per year

  • To assist in development and distribution of relevant resources to ensure that clinical and non-clinical staff have access to information about mental health problems and identification
  • Act as a resource for mental health related issues in relation to policy and procedure development, education and research
  • Participate in committees, working parties and research projects as agreed with Head of Psychiatric Liaison Nurses 
  • Contribute to the development and evaluation of effective early identification and assessment procedures for patients with, or at risk of, mental health problems
  • Assist in evaluation of the process of psychosocial referrals and participate in the development and implementation of best practice processes, pathways and documentation
