About Urology Department

The Urology Surgical Unit, a key component of the Surgical and Procedural Medicine Division (SAPM) at Austin Health, specialises in delivering comprehensive surgical care within the field of Urology. The unit serves patients across all Austin Health campuses, including both Austin Hospital and Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital.
Our team consists of highly skilled surgeons, surgical liaison nurses, and Urology Clinical Nurse Consultants, working in close collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team that includes Medical Oncology for patients undergoing cancer surgery. This integrated approach ensures that patients receive the highest standard of care.
The Urology Surgical Unit provides a full range of inpatient and outpatient services, including pre-operative and post-operative care through dedicated clinics at both Austin and Repatriation sites. We also offer a consultative service to other units within Austin Health and provide 24/7 on-call support for adult and paediatric urological emergencies.

About the role

The Clinical Nurse Consultant (CNC) is responsible for delivering effective clinical nursing management to patients within a specialised patient group, utilising advanced clinical skills. This role plays a key part in shaping clinical nursing service delivery, enhancing clinical quality and risk management, and upholding high standards of care within the designated specialty.

Specifically, this position involves working within the Austin Health Urology service, where the Urology Clinical Nurse Consultant, in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team, provides comprehensive education, training, treatment, and rehabilitation to patients under the care of the Urology Service.

A regular day will see you:

  • Provide pre-operative counselling and education of patients undergoing surgery
  • Organising and performing intra-vesical treatments for allocated patients with bladder cancer including BCG and Mitomycin
  • Working in outpatient clinics seeing patients on the inpatient wards or following up patients by phone

  • Significant urological nursing experience, with experience in a senior nursing role demonstrated in your professional practice portfolio
  • Evidence of a commitment to excellence in the care of urology patients, with demonstrated understanding of the care and management of urology patients in an inpatient and ambulatory setting. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse and complex professional workforce.
  • A flexible, innovative team-oriented approach to service delivery

The Austin Urology Unit is seeking an experienced Urology Clinical Nurse Consultant (CNC) to join our dynamic team. This part-time role (24 hours per week) involves delivering specialised nursing care within our Urology Surgical Unit, a key component of the Surgical and Procedural Medicine Division. The CNC will play a vital role in shaping clinical nursing service delivery, enhancing clinical quality, and ensuring the best possible patient outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide expert clinical nursing management for urological patients, including pre-operative counseling, treatment, and post-operative care.
  • Lead and coordinate Urology Nurse Led clinics, and support the multidisciplinary team in managing complex cases.
  • Facilitate staff learning and mentorship while driving evidence-based practice and research initiatives.
  • Engage in multidisciplinary care planning, ensuring comprehensive and safe patient discharge processes.
