Research Assistant – Flow Cytometry and Genotyping 

This is a 12-month full time position with the potential for an extension, funding dependent, and will be split between the Research Flow Core and Genotyping Core. Within the Genotyping Core the research assistant will genotype genetically modified samples and perform associated laboratory tasks. Tasks will include DNA extraction, conventional and real time PCR, genotyping by flow cytometry, and analysis and interpretation of results. Within the Research Flow Core tasks will include training researchers to operate flow cytometry analysis platforms, operate sorting platforms for research experiments, QC and maintenance of facility instrumentation, and troubleshooting issues. Both roles will require general laboratory housekeeping/administration tasks and the capability of working both co-operatively and independently within a small team.

Position Summary

This is a 12-month full time position with the potential for an extension, funding dependent, and will be split between the Research Flow Core and Genotyping Core. Within the Genotyping Core the research assistant will genotype genetically modified samples and perform associated laboratory tasks. Tasks will include DNA extraction, conventional and real time PCR, genotyping by flow cytometry, and analysis, interpretation and reporting of results. Within the Research Flow Core tasks will include training researchers to operate flow cytometry analysis platforms, operate sorting platforms for research experiments, QC and maintain facility instrumentation and trouble shoot issues. 
Both roles will require general laboratory housekeeping/administration tasks as required and the capability of working both co-operatively and independently within a small team.

Essential Requirements:

•    Bachelor of Science (Hons) (or equivalent experience) in biological/biomedical sciences
•    Experience in molecular biology techniques including PCR
•    Experience working in a PC2 laboratory
•    Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and independently with limited supervision
•    Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively and effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders 
•    Excellent attention to detail
•    Excellent organisational and time management skills
•    Demonstrated ability to follow a protocol and troubleshoot as required

Desirable Requirements:

•    Experience in Tick@lab and iLab.
•    Experience with Flow Cytometry
•    An understanding of genotyping

Key Accountabilities

1. Laboratory support    

•    General laboratory housekeeping/administration tasks as required
•    Organises ones work load, ensures samples are processed at an efficient throughput.
•    Assists the team and covers for team absences as required

2. Conduct tasks in a timely manner     

•    Accurately perform PCR and/or flow cytometry, and interpret subsequent results
•    Accurate recording of PCR and/or flow cytometry results in electronic formats (Excel, Tick@Lab, iLab)
•    Contribute to development and optimisation of protocols as required
•    Ensure QCs are performed and instruments released for use
•    Ensures that instrument bookings are adhered to (Analysis, sorting, training) 
•    Addresses and resolved researcher’s queries and requests in a timely manner

3. Fosters a good working relationship with colleagues  

•    Good working relationships within the team/s and with other internal and external stakeholders 
•    Clear communications with all stakeholders including researchers, animal house staff, Group Leaders and within the team. 
•    Willingness to help others in the lab as required or as directed
