OverviewE1 is a SaaS tender management platform connecting commercial builders with subcontractors and suppliers.
We are seeking a Principal Data Engineer to elevate our data strategy and the data engineering capabilities across E1's teams.
This role focuses on scaling, securing, and governing data platforms to align with business needs, regulatory requirements, and performance goals.
Location: Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.ResponsibilitiesDefine and lead E1's data strategy, including data warehousing, ETL/ELT processes, and data platform architecturePartner with the security team to ensure data architecture and governance meet compliance, regulatory, and business requirements, and strengthen privacy and security across data systemsReview, optimise, and maintain existing databases, queries, and indexes to maximise efficiency and performanceEstablish and champion best practices for database design, data modelling, and query optimisation across teamsDesign, build, and scale robust data pipelines for collecting, aggregating, transforming, and normalising data from multiple sourcesProvide direct leadership, mentoring, and technical guidance to software engineers in product engineering teamsAct as a thought leader and coach, uplifting engineering teams' data literacy and technical capabilitiesAbout YouYou have demonstrated success in leading data strategy, database architecture, and data pipeline development at scaleYou have experience leading and mentoring engineersYou have expertise in relational databases (design, optimization, architecture)You have familiarity with data platform approaches such as data warehouse, data lake, data mesh, etcYou have a strong background in data warehousing, ETL/ELT, and distributed data systemsYou're proficient in programming languages commonly used for data engineeringYou have experience with cloud-based data platforms and infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or Azure)You have familiarity with modern data tools (e.g., Snowflake, BigQuery, dbt, Airflow, Kafka)You're happy to learn and work with the tools we use, even if your current stack differsPerks and BenefitsChoose where you work - office, home, or a mixPart-time arrangements may be possible; apply and we'll explore options$5,000 per year for professional development$500 per year to design your own WFH setupFive days entrepreneurial leave per year to work on side projectsPaid parental leave (16 weeks primary carer, 6 weeks secondary carer)Volunteer leaveThree free and anonymous therapy sessions per yearRegular company activities on Friday afternoons (quarterly)2:1 matching for non-profit donationsSalaryBase pay range: A$190,000.00/yr - A$205,000.00/yrSalary range: We're transparent about salary ranges at E1; for this role the range is A$190,000 - A$205,000 + super (dependent on experience).
