We've been recognised twice on the AFR Best Place to Work list, and we care about making sure we're a place people want to work.

About The Role

We're looking for a Principal Data Engineer to elevate our data strategy and the data engineering capability across E1's teams. You will define, guide, and execute our data strategy, ensuring our databases, pipelines, and data platform solutions are scalable, performant, secure, compliant with regulatory requirements, and aligned with business needs. This role combines deep expertise in database design and optimization with mastery of modern data engineering practices to uplift teams, strengthen governance, and drive E1 toward becoming a truly data-driven organisation.

Responsibilities
  • Define and lead E1's data strategy, including data warehousing, ETL/ELT processes, and data platform architecture.
  • Partner with the security team to ensure data architecture and governance meet compliance, regulatory and business requirements, strengthening privacy and security across data systems.
  • Review, optimize, and maintain databases, queries, and indexes to maximize efficiency and performance.
  • Establish and champion best practices for database design, data modeling, and query optimisation across teams.
  • Design, build, and scale robust data pipelines for collecting, aggregating, transforming, and normalising data from multiple sources.
  • Provide leadership, mentoring, and technical guidance to software engineers in product engineering teams.
  • Act as a thought leader and coach to uplift engineering teams' data literacy and technical capabilities.
About You
  • You have demonstrated success in leading data strategy, database architecture, and data pipeline development at scale.
  • You have experience leading and mentoring engineers.
  • You have expertise in relational databases (design, optimization, architecture).
  • You are familiar with data platform approaches such as data warehouse, data lake, data mesh, etc.
  • You have a strong background in data warehousing, ETL/ELT, and distributed data systems.
  • You are proficient in programming languages commonly used for data engineering.
  • You have experience with cloud-based data platforms and infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or Azure).
  • You are familiar with modern data tools (e.g., Snowflake, BigQuery, dbt, Airflow, Kafka).
  • You're willing to learn and work with the tools we use, even if your stack differs.

The ability to champion our company values matters to us. If you're a motivated self-starter and collaborative person, we'd like you on our team. For more about our values, see Nuts & Bolts.

Perks

  • Choose where you work — office, home, or a mix of both. Part-time arrangements may be possible.
  • $5,000 per year for professional development.
  • $500 each year to design your own work-from-home setup.
  • 5 days of entrepreneurial leave per year for side projects.
  • Paid parental leave (16 weeks primary carer, 6 weeks secondary carer).
  • Volunteer leave.
  • Access to 3 free anonymous therapy sessions each year.
  • Company activities on Friday afternoons twice per quarter (escape rooms, drawing classes, games, online trivia).
  • 3:1 matching of non-profit donations.

Salary Range

Salary range for this role is $190,000–$205,000 + super (depending on experience). See https://careers.estimateone.com/ for more information.
