STeP123 is a Salvation Army initiative creating awareness of the importance of literacy in our everyday life, for all ages. The project has developed a range of literacy activities, resources and workshops: This is ME, STeP up to IT, FiF-Filling in Forms for adults, Count with Me DVD of counting songs and Little StePs ABC and 123 resource kits for children aged 0-5 years.

STeP123 has developed a volunteer reading mentor program in Tasmanian primary schools to help improve student reading, writing and conversation skills - Reading Together program.

STeP123 has established programs to improve social connections and literacy skills through contextual activities such as Card Buddies - an intergenerational communication project via written cards and letters.

Why this role matters

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a values-driven Program Coordinator to develop resources and strategies to improve children, adult and family literacy. You will coordinate and grow a team of volunteers that work in Schools, Corps and TSA social programs to assist children in improving literacy levels.

This position will support activities to encourage TSA Social Programs and Corps Officers to have a focus on improving literacy levels that enhance wellbeing, employment opportunities and pathways out of poverty.

The role you could play
- Work with key stakeholders to promote literacy with children and families across Tasmania
- Manage and recruit volunteers in the Reading Together program according to TSA volunteer policies and procedures
- Conduct workshops across Tasmania.
- Update and maintain the STeP123 website
- Maintain and build networks within The Salvation Army, and outside TSA
- Manage communications between schools and aged care facilities for Card Buddies project.
- Research, create and source new resources and tools to assist workers to engage with children, adult volunteers, and families

This is a permanent part time position, 18 hours per week located at our Tasmanian State Office in Derwent Park. Salary and conditions are in accordance with the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Award, Level 4.

What we're looking for
- Qualifications or experience in volunteer management and volunteer best practice/volunteering industry.
- Qualifications or experience project or event management or program development
- Qualifications or experience in early childhood education, literacy, tutoring
- A current TAS Drivers Licence
- Valid TAS Employee Working with Vulnerable Persons Check
- Ability to provide proof of Eligibility to Work in Australia
