We are looking for individuals who have a strong sense of self, are resilient and who are truly able to understand trauma and the behaviours of vulnerable young people in the Out of Home Care sector. You will provide therapeutic support and care and have the potential to make a difference to a young person's life.
The Berry Street Residential Care Program is one of the most rewarding and challenging roles you can apply for. The vulnerable young people you will be caring for have experienced and continue to experience trauma, neglect and abuse and your role is to help the young person thrive and feel safe in a home environment.
This role is not like any other and we are looking for the best carers for our young people; if you think that is you, we would love to hear from you
Our roster operates 24/7, offering a variety of day shifts (7am to 11pm) and overnight shifts (11pm to 7am).
Your Role
Using best practice therapeutic interventions and guidelines the main role of a Residential Care Worker is to create a safe and nurturing home environment, that provides consistent care for the young people. This includes being a positive role model, supporting young people in their educational, social, and recreational pursuits while fostering independence, as well as managing household duties and providing nutritious meals.
Your Skills and Experience
You will have sound knowledge and experience of the Out of Home Sector, and the understanding of the effects of trauma and how to care for young people who have been through this.
You will be a strong communicator, a creative thinker who is able to problem solve and able to adapt to varying situations with confidence and professionalism.
You will hold a Cert IV in Child, Youth & Family Intervention or equivalent qualification and are completing or willing to complete the mandatory Residential Care Top Up Units. Green P's or Full license is mandatory for transporting young people.
Why Berry Street
As one of Australia's largest independent agencies, we're dedicated to providing diverse programs to over 35,000 young people, children, and families across Victoria each year.
We are embarking on changing the landscape within the Out of Home Care Sector and are bringing in the Teaching Family Model of care. This uses teaching interactions, relationships and skills building which is targeted to reduce problem behaviours and increase prosocial behaviours. This model of care statistically has greater results for our young people in education, general care and reunification with family.
We believe in safety, thriving, and hope for all and strive to make this a reality every day
