Public Engagement Officer

The Garvan Research Foundation was founded in 1981 and is the fundraising and marketing arm of the Institute, raising awareness and vital funds from individuals, trusts and foundations and corporate and community groups.

The Foundation's income has grown from a fundraising base of $110,000 in its first year to more than $48 million in 2021 - approximately half of the Institute's total income. The remarkable success of the Foundation's activities is having a catalytic impact on our researchers' ability to make scientific contributions that will ultimately lead to earlier diagnosis, better treatments and prevention for a range of diseases.

Our mission is to harness all the information encoded in our genome to better diagnose, treat, predict and prevent disease. From the individual patient with rare disease, to the many thousands affected by complex, widespread illness, we are pioneering discoveries across diseases that have the deepest impact on our community.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Marketing and Communications team is a service provider to the entire Institute. We provide crucial support for teams within the Foundation to achieve their donor acquisition, engagement, retention and conversion targets. We support researchers and the executive with their marketing and communications needs, and are at the forefront of building the Garvan brand and public profile.

Sitting within the Marketing and Communications team, the Public Engagement Officer will deliver Garvan's Public Engagement Program with the ultimate aim of attracting support for Garvan's medical research. A key function of the role is to build Garvan's audience and donor base and raise the profile of Garvan among new and exisiting audiences.

The Public Engagement Officer will be required to develop, implement and tailor events, tours and educational opportunities to various stakeholders, including but not limited to general public, donors, VIPs, partners, corporate and government visitors. They will develop new opportunities to engage the public with Garvan's research.

The Public Engagement Officer will be an expert communicator and public presenter with experience in scientific or health communications, and relationship or client management. They will have impeccable attention to detail and take pride in developing and evaluating (from start to finish) a critical program that serves every arm of the business.

**Salary**: $80k + 10.5% super + salary packaging

WHAT YOU WILL DO

The key responsibilities include:
- Proactively communicating the importance of community investment in Garvan's work through the coordination and delivery of the Public Engagement Program which consists of:
- Public Seminars-
- Public Tours-
- External Presentations-
- Generating a significant and measurable number of new leads for the Garvan database:
- Inspiring support and expressions of interest through all public-facing activities;-
- Seeking and measuring feedback from visitors.-
- Proactively seeking out new opportunities to promote Garvan's work to target demographics;-
- Developing, coordinating and delivering compelling and polished bespoke or small group tours as required across the Foundation and the Institute:
- Confirming speakers and laboratory/facility access;-
- Developing detailed and accurate run sheets;-
- Briefing all relevant staff;-
- Facilitating tours-
- Working with the Garvan Events Officer on related events:
- Briefing the Events Officer about event logistic requirements-
- Working closely with scientists to ensure their presentations are engaging, on brand and accessible for a general audience.- Providing exemplary customer service expertise to the public to provide a welcoming initial contact with Garvan- Strategy, planning and reporting of public engagement activities:
- Contributing to the development of yearly strategic plans, area work plans and projects;-
