The key duties of the position include:
Housing and Homelessness Reporting and Development Unit – APS6 Project officer
The Housing and Homelessness Reporting and Development Unit is responsible for delivering evidence about homelessness support services and housing assistance provided to Australians in need. The Unit is also responsible for supporting states and territories to develop nationally consistent data definitions for national reporting requirements.
The successful project officer applicant would perform all or some of the following:
Lead a small team of 1 to 2 staff.
Lead the coordination of projects, including liaising with analysts, data visualisation experts and the web/publishing teams.
Undertake authoring/reviewing of reports using data provided by analysts and contribute to data visualisations for reports.
Contribute to technical committee papers and coordinate meetings.
Effectively liaise with stakeholders both within and external to the AIHW.
To be successful in this role, you will have well-developed skills in, or aptitude for, project management, authoring of data reports, strong verbal and written communication skills and sound organisational skills.
Child Welfare Unit – APS6 Project officer
The Child Welfare Unit (CWU) is looking for talented and enthusiastic project officers to join the unit. The CWU collects and analyses data to support reporting and policy decisions on children and young people in contact with the child protection system and children who have been adopted.
The successful applicant would undertake the following:
Manage data development projects under national commitments such as the National Agreement on Closing the Gap Target 12, Safe and Supported: National Framework to Protect Australia's Children and the National strategy to Prevent and Respond to Child Sexual Abuse.
Manage a small team to produce outputs from the Child Protection National Minimum Dataset (CP NMDS) and linked data assets for annual releases of Child Protection Australia, the Report on Government Services and other ad hoc data requests.
Work with internal and external stakeholders to deliver the CWU's work program.
To be successful in this role, you will have well-developed skills in project work, data analysis, verbal and written communication, sound organisational skills and staff management skills.
Tobacco, Alcohol and Other Drugs Unit – APS6 Project officer
The Tobacco, Alcohol and Other Drugs (TAOD) Unit is responsible for the collection, validation, analysis, and reporting on alcohol, tobacco, vape, and other drug use prevalence and alcohol and drug treatment services. This includes leading and contributing to projects that consolidate alcohol, tobacco, vape, and other drugs data from across multiple national collections to identify trends in use, drug-related harm, attitudes and behaviours, treatment, and emerging issues and drugs of concern.
The successful applicant would undertake all or some of the following:
Interpret survey analysis output and identify key trends and results for reporting from the 2025 National Drug Strategy Household Survey (NDSHS).
Manage and prepare reports for public release based on analysis output.
Support the release of a range of products, including reports, data tables, data visualisations, confidential data sets, metadata, progress reports and agenda papers.
Manage analysis and output of results.

Suicide and Self-Harm Monitoring Unit – APS6 Project officer
The Suicide and Self-Harm Monitoring Unit (SSHMU) is responsible for the implementation and continuous improvement of the National Suicide and Self-harm Monitoring System. This involves the analysis and publication of data across multiple discrete and linked administrative data sets, including focused work on priority populations identified under the National Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Agreement. One of several projects within this Unit is AIHW's role in supporting the development of the National Suicide Prevention Outcomes Framework (Outcomes Framework) in partnership with the National Suicide Prevention Office (NSPO). The available role includes supporting the Project Lead in developing and contributing to activities to establish the mixed methods data approach and indicator reporting to support the NSPO's national outcomes framework for suicide prevention. The role will also include contribution to data and reporting activities undertaken in the broader SSHMU team.
Under general direction, this role may require the successful candidate to perform all or some of the following:
Organising, managing and undertaking project tasks and activities, including providing advice on any issues or risks that may arise, escalating when necessary, and the provision of administrative and/or professional support for the project.
Providing support and contributing to the development of documentation relating to the development of the Outcomes Framework.
Undertake complex research, analysis and interpretation of data. Including the collation of data from multiple sources.
Liaising with internal and external stakeholders.
Authoring and reviewing content for the development of web content to be hosted on the AIHW website.
