About The Way Back ServiceThe Way Back is a non-clinical support service focused on providing trauma-informed, recovery- orientated psychosocial support, for up to 3 months, to people who have experienced a suicide attempt or suicidal crisis.
The Way Back delivers support in partnership with Brisbane Youth Service (BYS) and the Institute of Urban Indigenous Health (IUIH) in the Brisbane North region.
As a non-clinical service, The Way Back views clinical and psychosocial support as complementary rather than alternate approaches.
0.8 FTE contract fixed term to 30 June 2026 with high possibility of extension About the role
• Build positive relationships with participants based on mutual respect and a shared sense of safety and responsibility.

• Utilise trauma-informed, recovery-orientated, and strengths-based approaches to support participants to move through crisis and rebuild their lives.

• Collaborate with participants to develop meaningful safety plans to reduce their suicidality and increase their wellbeing.

• Collaborate with participants to identify their unmet needs and personal goals to develop meaningful support plans for the duration of their engagement and beyond.

• Work with participants to build their capacity to self-manage distress, engage with services, and utilise supports.

• Facilitate service navigation and coordination of mental health and community services.

• Work with service providers and community groups to create a support network for participants.
Role criteria
• Tertiary qualifications in social work, psychology, or a related field.

• Experience working in mental health or related areas such as family and domestic violence.

• Experience providing psychosocial support.

• Demonstrated ability to apply trauma-informed, recovery-oriented, and strengths-based approaches to working with suicidality and distress.

• Demonstrated knowledge of and skills in utilising non-clinical approaches to working with suicidality, emotional distress, trauma, violence, relationship breakdown, grief, and loss.

• Demonstrated experience in safety planning and responding to distress.

• Demonstrated experience in working collaboratively with a range of clinical and non-clinical service providers and community supports.

• Ability to use a range of software for administration and support coordination.
