The Australian Genomic Cancer Medicine Centre (AGCMC, also known as Omico) is a not-for-profit, nationwide network of centres and medical research institutes that delivers precision medicine clinical trials and studies for the screening, prevention and treatment of cancers. It has a focus on patients with rare, less common and early onset cancers, and cancers with poor outcomes. The Molecular Screening and Therapeutics (MoST) program is a key component of the AGCMC, running in New South Wales since 2016 and co-ordinated at the Garvan Institute, and requires a bioinformatics research officer for operations and development.
THE OPPORTUNITY
We are seeking a Research Officer to join Prof David Thomas's research group to understand the molecular underpinnings of inherited sarcoma susceptibility. The research officer will lead and contribute bioinformatics and statistical analysis with a primary focus on statistical fine-mapping and functional bioinformatics using whole genome sequencing cohorts.
**Salary**: Up to $100,000 + 14% super dependent on experience
Employment Type: 2 year maximum term contract

WHAT YOU WILL DO
- Planning and executing research
- Analysing common, rare and structural variants from whole genome sequencing datasets
- Developing methods to extract quantitative, ultra-low frequency variation from sequence data derived from tumor and blood samples.
- Develop novel computational methods to extract biological knowledge
- Develop pharmacogenomics approaches in case: control cohort
ABOUT YOU
- A PhD in bioinformatics or computational biology, or equivalent experience in a related field.
- Proficiency with genotyping of human samples using massively parallel sequencing technology.
- Expertise in integrating and merging biological databases into variant annotations
- Ability to manage and process large datasets in a POSIX environment.
- Fluency in at least one scripting language.
- Excellent communication skills and strong in team work and collaborative research
- Ability to conceptualise and execute a research plan to investigate an open-ended question, with mínimal supervision.
- A proven track record e.g. publications, grants, software/tool development
- Familiarity with the ethical issues and guidelines relating to the use of human tissue and clinical data for research
- Statistical expertise and experience with the R programming language and key libraries is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of cancer biology and evolution is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with public bioinformatics resources such as UK biobank, ENCODE etc is highly desirable.
